Demonstration on Swan Lake Wetland Restoration and Migratory Avifauna Conservation
Targeted Location and Population:
The Rongcheng Swan Lake is located at Chengshan Township, Rongcheng city, Shandong Province.Due to the moderate temperature and abundant water & food, thousands upon thousands migratory birds including whooper swans fly to spend winter here every year.
Major populations are farmers for agriculture and aquaculture.
Problems:
In recent ten years, economic development and human activities have become the leading factors threatening the wetland ecosystem of Swan Lake. As a result of overdevelopment on agriculture and cultivation, the source of water is being destroyed, peripheral area of wetland is shrinking, the vegetation is lessened, the benthic fauna and flora are declining and the food for inhabitant birds is decreasing sharply. According to incomplete statistics, every year there are more than 300 swans and 1000 rare birds either killed or wounded.
Solutions/ planned activities:
1. Rescue the perching birds;
2.Provide training on swan protection and build village-based and township-based rescue station;
3.Restore wetlands ecosystem;
4.Research on oviposition and incubation of swans
Anticipated results/immediately outputs of this project:
1.Around 60 swans are rescued
2.about 200 persons know the knowledge of swan proetction,2 village-based and township-based rescue stations are established
3.about 50 Mu wetlands ecosystem has been restored
4. one research report on on oviposition and incubation of swans is completed.
