BONDE WETLANDS AND BIODIVERSITY MANAGEMENT PROJECT

BACKGROUND
-Bonde village is is in Chitsanza ward 19 of Nyanga district. its main source of water is the mutarazi river. household livelihoods are centered on farming.

PROJECT GOAL
the goal of this project is sustainable management of biodiversity and water resources in order to improve the livelihoods of households in bonde village.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES
- increased wood biomass production at the household and community levels
-improved efficiency in the use of wood biomass energy resources for cooking
- improves access to water resources and better management of wetland areas.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES
-establishing househpold and tree nurseries
-establishing household and project woodlots
-planting jatropha as live fencing around gardens and homesteads
-awareness raising on the need to conserve vegetation cover
-formulating and implementing bylaws that protect natural springs and river heads and woodlots
-preventing stream bank cultivation
-harnessing water through constructing a weir

ANTICIPATED RESULTS
-improved access to water for tree nurseries, woodlots and orchards
-increased capacity to expand tree growing at home and as hedges
-engaging in beekeeping in the woodlots, orchards and indigenous woodlands
-introduction of fish farming
-vegetable production for home consumption and for marketing
-increased employment opportunities
-access to readily available foodstuffs
-improved ecosystem
-increased environmental; awareness

Replication of project activities

As long as the project members continue to fulfill the objective set and achieving them the project will become popular and thus will be replicated in other wards.

The organization is seeking funding from other organization to extend the project impact.

Policy Influence

The project greatly influenced the communities to develop own by laws to guard against unsustainable exploitation of natural resources. for example a fine of a bucket of sorghum, a goat, a chicken is paid off by the offender depending on the extent of the offense. the by law instituted will help in protecting natural springs and rivers.

Project sustainability

The project members are now very capable of making decisions and resolving conflicts. However financial aid is still critical to achieve some of the objectives not yet fulfilled.

Planning gef grant

There are plans to expand the water harvesting project in order to increase afforestation, gully reclamation and development of more orchards.

Notable Community Participation

the 450 project members are the project owners and implementors. they will participate at lal levels of project implementation.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

the project aims at improving means of livelihoods of the communities through proper wetland managemnt and biodivesrity conservation. an improved well catered for water source will enhance food production through gardening.

Capacity - Building Component

the project is aimed at capacity building of the local people so that they are able to manage their project suatainably through various trainings in biodiversity managemnt.

Policy Impact

the project will have an effect on local policies. there will be formulation and implementation of bylwas on woodland managemnt, natural springs and those that prevent sream bank cultivation.

Gender Focus

the project will mainstream gender issues into the project and will also nsure participation by all people of different sexs and age groups.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

various awareness meetings shall be conducted to ensure public understanding of the need to conserve biodiversity for its benefit ad of that the future generations.

Project Results

The Results

5 gullies were reclaimed and 1000 gum trees planted, 300 Jatropha and 300 indigenous trees in a fenced off one hectare woodlot.

Fruit trees were planted namely; 50 orange, 50 nartijes in an fenced off 70mx70m fruit orchard.

6500 assorted trees comprising gums, misasa and mikute were planted at household level.

Two Chingwa stoves were constructed as demonstration units and three builders were trained in the construction of these stoves.
