BONDE WETLANDS AND BIODIVERSITY MANAGEMENT PROJECT
BACKGROUND
-Bonde village is is in Chitsanza ward 19 of Nyanga district. its main source of water is the mutarazi river. household livelihoods are centered on farming.
PROJECT GOAL
the goal of this project is sustainable management of biodiversity and water resources in order to improve the livelihoods of households in bonde village.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
- increased wood biomass production at the household and community levels
-improved efficiency in the use of wood biomass energy resources for cooking
- improves access to water resources and better management of wetland areas.
PROJECT ACTIVITIES
-establishing househpold and tree nurseries
-establishing household and project woodlots
-planting jatropha as live fencing around gardens and homesteads
-awareness raising on the need to conserve vegetation cover
-formulating and implementing bylaws that protect natural springs and river heads and woodlots
-preventing stream bank cultivation
-harnessing water through constructing a weir
ANTICIPATED RESULTS
-improved access to water for tree nurseries, woodlots and orchards
-increased capacity to expand tree growing at home and as hedges
-engaging in beekeeping in the woodlots, orchards and indigenous woodlands
-introduction of fish farming
-vegetable production for home consumption and for marketing
-increased employment opportunities
-access to readily available foodstuffs
-improved ecosystem
-increased environmental; awareness
