Local Approach to Address Water and Land Degradation
Target Population/Location of project:
60 members of 10 families in Baan Sobkok, Tambol Baan Saew, Chiangsaen District, Chiangrai Province?an ecological portion of the Mekhong River Basin. The target population earns their living planting corn and tobacco. In response to threats to livelihood and health posed by chemical agriculture, the project proposed to use a community-based approach to control unregulated application.
Objectives:
1. Rehabilitate Mekhong River Basin soil, and reduce costs associated with agricultural activities
2. Build capacity in organic compost production; forge network
3. Promote production of chemical-free protein solution
Planned activities:
1. Produce natural chemical fertilizer, using husbandry approach
2. Conduct a forum for people within the village and from neighboring villages
3. Hold meetings every three months amongst project members to engage in participatory evaluation and plan for scaling-up the project
4. Launch a community-scale business by selling low-cost husbandry products to community
Anticipated outputs:
1. Production of two tons of natural fertilizer; used to replace chemical fertilizer--and therefore rehabilitate land--on at least 16 ha
2. Reduction of annual expenditure on chemical fertilizer by THB 30,000
3. Increase in participatory nature of community activities and decision-making
4. Spread of project approach to neighboring areas
5. Increase in quantity of chemical-free pork available for community consumption
