Biogas Production from Manure for Renewable Energy
Biogas Production from Manure for Renewable Energy
Target Population/Location of project:
100 community members from 32 households in three districts of Surathani Province. Network members earn their living by paddy farming and gardening. The project location is situated in the Tapi River basin of the Gulf of Thailand. The project aims to demonstrate the use of biogas to reduce dependence upon fossil fuels (LPG and grid electricity) and firewood, which is now scarce.

Objectives:
1. Educate target population on producing biogas from animal manure
2. Reduce the use of chemical substances by gradual introduction of natural compost
3. Promote renewable energy technology from animal manure

Planned activities:
1. Twice-a-year learning forum on productive uses of animal manure
2. Study tours
3. Construction and use of biogas pits
4. Production of organic compost using biogas byproduct
5. Equipping 'learning centers' in three districts

Anticipated outputs:
1. Reduction of expense on daily energy for cooking and lighting
2. Increased community awareness of value of manure
3. Avoidance of CO2 emission by approx. 750 kg per month
4. Reduction of fertilizer expenditures by THB 4,000/year, per cultivated area of four acres
5. Creation and distribution of dissemination materials
6. Three non-project groups adopt the project approach
