COMMUNITY-BASED BIODIVERSITY CONSRVATION AND PROTECTION ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT
The project aims to enhance community-based partnership approaches towards biodiversity conservation and protection at Sibalom Natural Park. The project is expected to increase the participation and involvement of the communities and Barangay LGUs in forest rehabilitation and conservation. The objectives of the project: Organized four (4) new POs and strengthen four (4) other existing POs; Training and Develop para-legal/bantay gubat in each of the eight barangays; Enhance the application and practice of SALT and soil and water conservation or rain forestation farming technology; Rehabilitate watershed areas; Lobby for the formulation, enforcement and monitoring of loval ordinance related to biodiversity conservation; Coordinate/link with other resource agencies.
The project intends to capacitate the community leaders towards effective community-based biodiversity conservation. These shall include orientation on environmental laws, training on seed/wildling collection, nursery establishment, waste management, amd mobilization of Environmental Watch and Action Group. The presence of paralegal volunteers will help in the documentation of environmental issues and concerns as well as in the apprehension of violators for those deputized as Bantay Gubat.
Another component is the watershed rehabilitation. A total of 10 HAs of watershed areas will be developed or rehabilitated with the use of indigenous tree species. The project will make use od indigenous tree species. Rainforestation training will also be provided.
The project will also involved the development of 20 Has. of upland areas with the use of Sloping Agricultural Land Technology (SALT). Considering the development of upland area is a very tedious work, the project will promote the bayanihan system or "dagyaw" (in local dialect).
