The Exploratorium: Designing and implementing an informal science learning environment to highlight Bahamian ecosystems and amplify learning opportunities through Friends of the Environment’s programs
This project aims to create an interpretive environmental education experience as part of the Exploratorium at the Friends of the Environment Learning Centre in Marsh Harbour, Abaco. The Learning Centre is a new destination designed to reach locals and visitors to Abaco, while raising awareness about Abaco?s rich biodiversity and importance of our ecosystems and the services they provide. Prior to Hurricane Dorian, FRIENDS? Education Centre had grown to be a popular spot for education and community programs including a small natural history exhibit, which reached 587 people in its first 6 months of operation. The popularity of our programs demonstrates a need for this type of facility to return to Abaco. This Learning Centre aims to fill a gap by providing a centralized and freely accessible location to obtain information about the Bahamian environment and to engage with conservation and education professionals to support capacity building and environmental ambassadorship amongst Bahamian students. The audience for these exhibits will include 21 public and private Abaco schools, visiting schools from other Bahamian islands, international schools, the wider Abaco community (over 17,000 residents), and Abaco visitors by air and sea (with the exception of cruise passengers) of which there were 85,397 reported in 2022.
