Development and Strengthening of Management Capacities at Quilombo Mesquita

This project will work on the conservation of the Cerrado through the technical and management development of the Quilombo Mesquita Territory Association - ATQ M (network construction). The idea is to build a shared vision through a process of facilitating dialogues and actors' perceptions places with respect to the three additional activities carried out in the community, that is, giving more autonomy to
local organizations work on the form of governance, ownership, empowerment and the conservation of this territory as a consequence. The collective idealization of the Productive Community Project - N?golo Celebration, name given to the wine of guabo-de-angola (Hibiscus sabdariffa) with the recognition of the Angolan matrix at Quilombo Mesquita and aims to strengthen the production of
self-sustainable income and to enrich the cultural calendar of the community. It is the united opportunity for their own
community be able to empower and publicize their socio-cultural experiences. The N ? golo Celebration therefore, is the
consecration of these experiences, strengthening the protection of your territory.

Replication of project activities

During the course of the project, it became clear how much the community needs internal organization, to strengthen the old ones and build new leaderships. Grassroots work will be the key to strengthening Quilombo Mesquita in the future and with the community actively participating in decisions.

Gender Focus

Gender relations are being a theme worked by Rede Bartô and the community, as the role of women in Quilombo is very strong. As the story itself tells, they were the ones who woke up to the struggles for freedom, since the times of slavery. In today's society, they are still responsible for the preservation and transmission of culture through school and moral values. They are the maximum representation in the search for the rights of the Quilombo.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Meetings for presentation, discussion of the proposal and selection of network actors, support the holding of the N?golo Festival (local celebration) and support local activities related to local culinary and other traditional products from the community.

Policy Impact

Project sustainability

Seek a source of funds to better structure the ATQM and support families in a shared management of actions in the territory. In this way, and with the improvements in management and participation of families, supporting production, taking possibilities of low-cost technologies for irrigation, bringing the importance and care for the soil and the best form of production, adopting consortia, rotation of cultures and production without poison. Despite the lack of organization by the local association, the purchase of some equipment is a benefit that can help families a lot, even with the end of the project. Considering that families do not have the financial conditions to purchase equipment individually, collective use can and should boost production improvement, facilitate the management of some areas and still integrates the families, as shared management is a good start for the integration of these families.

The benefited Quilombola Association seeks the sociocultural strengthening of the community, with strong participation of women and young people.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The project doesn't contemplate Indigenous peoples, but Quilombola (maroon) communities and the N?golo Festival is a local recognized celebration, which is one of the main activity of the project.

Capacity - Building Component

The project will hold 10 capacity building workshops related to Cerrado culinary, for the production of cakes, sweets and breads.

Video covering the N'golo Festival showing the products prepared for sale will be produced and published on social networks and media in the region

Project Results

The project aimed to support the community in organizing the Celebration of N'golo, which is traditional at the Quilombo Mesquita territory, but with the covid-19 pandemic, the celebration did not take place and the activities were adapted to strengthen and unite the community in the face of all the difficulties imposed by the need of social isolation. With the project, agroecological production systems were adopted with the improvement of 10 productive home gardens with seedlings of fruit species, 5 home gardens with new vegetable beds, planting of 800 seedlings native to the cerrado and fencing the planted area. Additionally 3 workshops were held for the production of sweets, biscuits and jams; a quince pruning workshop (a fruit used to make traditional marmalade in the region); a Tô no Mapa workshop; a community conversation about problems with wildfires; and an exchange with the participation of 15 people who visited 2 Communities that Support Agriculture (CSAs) through a partnership with Aprospera. These activities helped integrate and mobilize the benneficiary community.
