Rural Bioeconomy: A Project Valorising Biodiversity Management through Enterprise Development and Sustainable Job Creation in Beausoliel, Saltibus, Choiseul.

This Planning Grant will assist the grantee in designing a rural bioeconomic project in which the feasibility for production of biofertilizers using indigenous micro-organisms (IMO) will be ascertained. The grantee will experiment specifically with the production of mushrooms within a rural setting and determine the cost effectiveness of that endeavour.

The grantee will engage in research and workshops and the outcome will be a Full Grant Project Proposal for funding.

Project Results

This project is about cultivating mushrooms of different species in various micro-climatic conditions.

The grantee completed research in the preparation and use of bio-fertilisers from plants found on the farm; selected three potentially commercially edible mushrooms for growing from the rainforest in the north of the country; and members received training in (i) understanding plant nutritional requirements; (ii) the role of K. P and N in the growth and health of plants; (iii) the use of electrical conductivity meters in determining the suitability of bio-fertilisers for plants; and (iv) harvesting and culturing of beneficial micro-organisms from the soil to inoculate into biofertilizers/compost. Finally, the grantee was able to experiment with straw, oyster and morrel mushrooms.

During project implementation, 4 persons were employed (3 men and 1 woman) who together received a total income of US$967 ( Men=$733 and woman =$234).

15 persons (8 women and 7 men) were trained in the areas of biofertilizer production and mushroom production.

Finally, the speed of project implementation was reduced due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the protocols implemented.

Based on the results, this project has been approved for development as a FG.
