Nature Conservation and Ecotourism at Bey?ehir
flora and fauna it hosts but, it has come to the point of being seriously damaged because of the surrounding socio-economic activities. In addition to various protection status and the efforts of related institutions for protection of the Lake and its environment, important tasks should also be undertaken by individuals as well as voluntarily operating non-governmental organizations in this field.
The evolving means of transportation and communication in recent years, natural landscape and biodiversity and recreation facilities of the site increases the number of visitors to the region. Considering the tourism potential of the region, damage of tourism activities on this sensitive ecosystem as experienced in other sectors like agriculture, industry, mining etc. is very likely unless necessary measures to orient tourism activities towards eco-tourism are taken on time.
On the top of juniper trees (Juniperus communis) in the cemeteries of Ye?ilda? District, located on the southwest coast of the Lake Bey?ehir at 31 Km west of Bey?ehir Town and Adaköy District, located at 5 Km further south, there are the nests of stork colonies which visit the site and breed every summer. This cute sites known as the Ye?ilda? Storks'Valley and Adaköy Storks' Hill are being visited by increasing number of visitors interested in bird waching. Necessary measures to be taken regarding the protection storks and these sensitive ecosystems and the arrangement of these visits in the form of ecotourism were determined by experts of our Association, Bey?ehir Municipality and muhtars of the districts who visited the sites all together and, they were subjected to this project.
