The Promotion of Sustainable Land Management (SLM) practices in two Chiefdoms in the Port Loko District.
The Promotion of Sustainable Land Management (SLM) practices in two Chiefdoms in the Port Loko District.
The project seeks to empower the land owners and land users in the five sections of Maforki Chiefdom, Port Loko District with knowledge and skills to enhance and improve their attitude towards sustainable land management. This will positively contribute to national call for afforestation which subsequently reduce the carbon emission into the atmosphere; prevent depletion of the Ozone layer; increase the level of the water table; increase in agricultural productivity through addition of the nutrients to the soil and increase in pollination of the crops by insects such as the honey bees; improve on the living standard through food self sufficiency by the provision of alternative livelihoods through vegetable and honey production; restore the habitat of organisms; increase organic matter content through the addition of organic matter content to the soil from by falling leaves, dead plants and animal remains; promote organic farming through the use of compost and promote the flora and fauna.

The prevention and control of wild bush fires that destroy soil structure, flora and fauna will be enhanced through the knowledge about the causes and the prevention strategies acquired. Fire wardens will be trained at community level to continue with the sensitization and awareness raising of wild bush fires and land degradation. The prevention and control of wild bush fire will reduce the rate of air pollution due to the emission of carbon mono oxides into the atmosphere which also causes the depletion of the ozone layer. Thus, the project shall contribute to mitigation the factors of global warming. The conservation of soil water through contouring, terracing, use of cover crops in deforested areas, mulching etc will be achieved through the minimizing evaporation which lead to loss of water from the soil.

The proposed project will conform with GEF SGP strategic priorities and its objective of mitigating the causes and negative impacts of land degradation through sustainable land management practices whilst also contributing to improving people?s livelihoods and economic well-being. This will be done through capacity building for mainstreaming of the country?s finalized National Action Plan (NAP) into local development policies and plans, and with a major emphasis on on-the-ground action to demonstrate SLM practices, the development of national and local capacities for implementation of actions aiming at sustainable land management.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
CIFD engaged the communities in the identification of their needs to have a good idea of the community needs. The project comes out from talking to different people who are directly affected which is done through listening, interviewing, focus group discussion and community mapping. CIFD encourages communities by doing capacity assessment of their human, social, natural, physical, economical and spiritual. This will help CIFD to identify the strength of the community during the implementation of the project and the use of available community resources. In the selection of the beneficiaries CIFD will have the communities participate in the process of wealth ranking. This enables CIFD to know the vulnerable class within the community
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
CIFD shall apply strategies to increase the ability of community trainers who shall themselves cascade the knowledge through trainings, mentoring, coaching and counseling. In working in the communities CIfD will through a process establish best practices and good governance for the efficient and accurate identification, management and dissemination of knowledge. Technologically CIfD will effectively choose, configure and utilize tools and automation to enable knowledge management. Structures will be put together by CIfD to transform communities and the organization to facilitate and encourage cross-discipline awareness expertise. CIfD has a culture of knowledge sharing and knowledge driven which will be replicated in the implementation of the project. CIfD will make use of the knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) model through continuous monitoring of the activities. The KAP model will guide CIfD to observe the change in attitude in the adoption of the techniques in the implementation of the project. Considering the rate of illiteracy in the project area CIfD will conduct most trainings in the local language for better understanding and will do practical activities through demonstration in the field. Feedback sessions are conducted for every training and activity to measure both qualitative and quantitative responses which will help in the assessment of whether the training was successful or not
