Protection and management of the Tambaka wild life conservation area, biodiversity and improving agricultural productivity.

This project seeks to contribute to Community Landscape Conservation. The main objective of this project is to promote best practices by providing alternative livelihood that will enhance resource conservation in the Tambaka wild life conservation area. The project will intervene to restore sanity and stop logging, charcoal production and hunting of bush animals. This project will promote community bylaws that serve as restrictive mechanisms in the use of the Tambaka wild life conservation at the same time strengthen the livelihood opportunities (including sustainable farming, cattle rearing and fishing) in the areas after the buffer zones of the Timbaka Conservation area. The project activities will include community dialogue meetings, training sessions on conservation, monitoring of the wild life conservation area, construction of fish ponds and support to farmers with agricultural materials. The project will be implemented by Advocacy for Marginalized Children and Youth Programme (AMCYP-SL) in consultation with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security for the management and protection of the Tambaka wild life conservation area. This project will successful promote co-management of the Tambaka wild life conservation area from being destroyed by human activities leading to the extinction of animals, plant speecies, agricultural productivity and climate change. AMCYP-SL seeks to strengthen its working relationship with GEF Small Grants Programme in implementing this project through wild life conservation and management of its resources.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

AMCYP-SL have strength in community development programmes and awareness raising with general knowledge on environmental promotion and protection. Conservation of wildlife and biodiversity is not a new concept for the organization but this requires working with Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security to provide the required support for the project to succeed.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

During the planning stage of the project, research was undertaken on wild life and biodiversity conservation and Management covering those implemented by PACC Project for West Africa, NPAA, and FAO/IFAD and the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security (MAFFS) and the success have been documented. These will be used for training of the beneficiaries involving experience sharing with the previous implementers. AMCYP-SL project staff will work with the donors and relevant line Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs) to best utilize the findings of the project implementation for replication in other parts of the country having similar problems that this project hopes to address

Gender Focus

It is common fact that there are more women and youths engaged in daily livelihood activities especially trade and timber logging. The forests, streams, wet lands, ponds and swamps are the breeding places for various types of animals. In Sierra Leone, it has been shown that more than 60% farming/agricultural activities are done by the women in the rural areas. They are the vegetable farmers and take care of the farm immediately after the ploughing up to the post-harvest. They also have a good stock of knowledge that the project can use to achieve its goals. Therefore, their involvement at all stages of the project is very crucial. They will constitute 60% of the beneficiaries of this project.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The dominant activity in the project communities is upland farming. Since this has been affected by expansion in charcoal burning and timber logging, and since this activity has negative impact on wild life conservation and biodiversity, this project proposes strengthening of alternative livelihood activities like fish farming, cultivation of moringa and inland valley swamp development for household income generation.

Notable Community Participation

This project is purely community driven where the communities/target beneficiaries are involved in the project design through meetings held with leaders of the communities who identify the problems and ways of addressing them. These people will continue to involve in the implementation of the project activities and taking ownership of the project by monitoring the conservation area and implementation of community bye-laws.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

This project will complement studies done by FAO and other institutions especially the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security. The results will be used for sharing with the community through stakeholder meetings, town hall meetings so that the relevant information and knowledge is available to them to build a good collaboration for biodiversity restoration and conservation of these forests.

Policy Impact

This project will contribute to achieving the Environmental Protection Act, Forestry Management Policy and Conservation. Memorandum of understanding will be established with key stakeholders that are responsible for policy formulation and enactment for protection and proper management of the wild life conservation area.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Throughout the project implementation, community people are key participants actively involved in the project and its sustainability depends on them, wherein they are the driving force to ensure the protection and management of the conservation area through the formation of the monitoring groups. All training will be conducted in the native language for active participation of the people.
