National platform on education for sustainable development: from global strategies to local actions

The main objective of the project is to establish national platform for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Ukraine in line with world best practices and UNECE regional process. The specific tasks of the project are the following: - develop national legislation on ESD; - reestablish CSOs-government inter-institutional working group on ESD strategies; - provide gender analysis and recommendations to National ESD Report; - pilot ESD elements in schools of Chernihiv and Zhytomyr regions; - develop capacities of the CSOs? partnership network "Education for Sustainable Development in Ukraine"; - ensure wide media coverage of the process and participate in the regional ESD processes.

Project Characteristics and Results

Gender Focus

Gender equality is a part of project policy and all parties participate in project activities on equal base and benefit from project results.

Notable Community Participation

The project raised awareness of young people about sustainable development by disseminating the best educational developments, including interactive training courses and environmental games, namely, produced and distributed 1,000 copies of the game "Green Manager. Version 2". A number of proposals for non-formal education for children with special needs were also prepared.

Project Results

The main goals of the project were achieved:

1. An updated national report on the implementation of the UNECE strategy for education for sustainable development in Ukraine was prepared and sent to the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
2. A questionnaire was developed for the National Report in order to widely involve representatives of civil society organizations, the results of the survey were analyzed and discussed during the consultations.
3. Proposals for the action plan of the Intersectoral Working Group on the Development of Environmental Education and Education for Sustainable Development were prepared.
4. The best developments on education for sustainable development, including environmental games, interactive training courses, were disseminated during a number of public events, which raised the awareness of 430 people ? members of the public, and young people in particular.
5. Lectures on achieving the goals of sustainable development and education for sustainable development were included in the ongoing in-service training courses of the State Ecological Academy of Postgraduate Education and Management at the Ministry of Nature of Ukraine.
6. Work on non-formal education for sustainable development with children with special needs began, and proposals for local consultations were prepared.
7. Capacity development of the Partnership Network "Education for Sustainable Development in Ukraine" was ensured, namely: one public organization joined the Public Council under the Ministry of Nature of Ukraine: network experts facilitated five trainings with 150 people. 8. Presentation of best practices and developments in education for sustainable development in Ukraine at a meeting of the UNECE Steering Committee in Geneva, Switzerland, which took place on May 2-3, 2019. 9. 1,000 copies of the game "Green Manager. Version 2" were published and distributed.
10. 350 copies of methodical recommendations on land degradation and education for sustainable development were published and distributed.
11. Information about the project implementation and news of education for sustainable development was disseminated ? 40 news on the site ecoosvita.org.ua, three articles in the print media and one article in the collection of scientific works of the international scientific-practical conference.
