The Establishment of Land Use Protocols in Conservation and Resource Management in the Traditional area of Rumantai Village, Ranau, Sabah, Malaysia.
K?D?VATO village organization was established in October 2010. It is established by the community as an organization to lead the village in the community?s welfare, safeguarding the community?s safety and responsible for protecting the community?s biodiversity resources as the Kampung Rumantai village has no JKKK (Jawatankuasa Kemajuan Keselamatan Kampung) and Head of the Village (Ketua Kampung). Rumantai village Community is led by the organization of K?D?VATO to join forces, ideas and goals towards the creation of a Community Use Zone (ZKK) in order to preserve and conserve the customary areas to ensure the sustainability of natural resources that are important to the community.

Rumantai village is located in the Ranau District, about 80 kilometers from Ranau Town in Sabah. The estimation of population in Kampung Rumantai is more then 300 people, which comprised the Dusun ethnic group and are fully dependent on agricultural activities as a source of daily living. Traditionally in Dusun community practice, the customary community is clear where the land use and design is traditionally determined, such as the village area with the area for agriculture (turn-around crops), long-term and short-term crops. Meanwhile, forest areas for resource extraction and water catchment have also been determined for communal use of the community. For Dusun community, turn-around practice is the main activity inherited since ancestors. Tree cutting activities for making houses, firewood, traditional medicine and so forth are done to meet the needs of community life. For the Dusun farmer's turn-around practice is a practice to maintain the fertility of the soil and to maintain its well-preserved resources, still in use today.

Due to the current influx of modernization and population growth, there are some problems faced by communities such as not yet recognized for the existence of villages, the customary area of the community is increasingly narrow due to uncontrolled land clearing and extensive forest clearing for farming or agriculture , resulting in loss of biodiversity resources. Apart from the development activities of the village community itself, there is also an intrusion by outsiders and companies that apply customary land which poses a major threat to the Rumantai village community.

Through the process of mapping water catchment areas, river system and tracking rules through land use protocols, the community can preserve and conserve vital resources in the community?s customary territories. External training and disclosure can strengthen and enhance the community?s ability to act and implement holistic development.
