Recycling and Environmentally Sound Management of Domestic Hazardous Waste in Residential Community
Recycling and Environmentally Sound Management of Domestic Hazardous Waste in Residential Community
The four participating cities Shenzhen, Foshan, Dongguan and Huizhou are in the Delta region of Guangdong Province. They are also known as the largest urban agglomeration in the world. Moreover, Guangdong Province is also a large province in terms of industrial hazardous waste production, household chemicals and other hazardous wastes. Therefore, it now has already been the center of the developed waste treatment industry and even the global e-waste dismantling industry.

Main problems:
The main problem is that the current residential community organizations, including property companies, are passively involved in waste sorting activities. The responsibility of waste sorting is not clearly identified. Residents in general lack of hazardous waste management knowledge and skills.

Solutions/activities?
1?conduct baseline survey on domestic hazardous waste sorting in 4 targeted cities;
2) organize community outreach activities and establish hazardous waste collection station and install facilities in demonstration communities;
3) Prepare online and offline hazardous waste management training course and provide training to targeted residential communities;
4) Organize residents to visit hazardous waste treatment to raise public awareness;
5) Hold workshop and develop domestic hazard waste scientific knowledge popularization handbook;
6) Transform the outcome of project into legislative proposals such as the proposal to Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Guangdong Political Consultative Conference.

Anticipated results:
1) 7000 households have the skill of hazardous waste sorting and participated in hazardous waste sorting
2) 5000kg of waste batteries and 40000 piece of mercury-contained lamps collected in 19 communities and sent to hazardous waste treatment
3) 4000 people trained through 95 waste management workshops with an average size of 40 people.
4) A comprehensive hazardous waste management handbook developed and distributed widely
5) Two legislative policy proposal submitted to NPC and CPPCC that could make great impact on the classification of community harmful substances.
