The project site is located in Yushu County, Qinghai Province where the ecological environment is extremely fragile. There is 1.52million ha. of grassland in Yushu, which accounts for 87% of the total area. Alpine meadow is the main ecosystem. Due to long time over grazing, reclamation and climatic warming and drying in this region, over 80% of the grassland is degraded to varying degrees. The total population in project site is 9092 people with about 99.8% of the population is Tibetan. The annual income per capita is about 7,500 RMB.

Main problems:
1) Unreasonable grassland management measures and global climate change are key reasons of grassland degradation. Grassland degradation weaken ecological service functions and reduce productivity and the adaptability of regional grassland ecosystems.
2) The past policies and strategies are more focused on improving economic productivity rather than sustainable development of agriculture and environmental resources.
3) Lack of awareness of grassland ecosystem services
4) The grassroots management institutions at all levels have weak supervision.

Solutions/activities
1) Conduct research on the current situation of grassland animal husbandry production, obtaining relevant information on grassland, livestock and grassland management of the pastoralists.
2) Demonstrate livestock sheds dual-use technology to enhance livestock productivity and pastoralists' livelihood by planting vegetable in summer and livestock calving and lambing in winter.
3) Planting forge grass by using manure in livestock sheds to increase productivity and reduce carbon emission
4) Improve the community-based grassland ecological compensation mechanism and construct a pastoralists participatory monitoring and evaluation indicator system for grass health.
5) Organize various training workshops and distribute brochures for sharing advanced technology and grassland management experience.

Anticipated result:
1) A baseline report on livestock production status in project site completed;
2) 75 demonstration household adopted climate smart grassland management technology and 50% GHG emission from animal husbandry reduced and their income is doubled;
3) 600 ha. of degraded grassland is improved through demonstration of control grazing technology;
4) 100 households in the projected area are trained with grassland versatility evaluation technology;
5) Design and distribute 200 copies of comprehensive grassland management handbook.
610 case studies developed and shared among 150 targeted people at WeChat platform.
