Biodiversity Conservation at Nyanpo Yuzee in Golog, Qinghai
This project is located in Nianbao Yuze area in Jiuzhi County, Guoluo Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, which is the core area of Sanjiangyuan National Nature Reserve. There are 5,575 households of herdsmen in Jiuzhi County, with 477 in core areas. Around 95.6% of locals believe in Tibetan Buddhism. Average annual income per capita in Jiuzhi county was 3804 RMB in 2013 and therefore it classified as poverty county in Qinghai Province.
Main problems
1) Unorganized tourism has resulted adverse environmental impact;
2) Weak public environment protection awareness:
3) Lack of effective communication and cooperation between the government, monasteries, locals and NGOs
Solutions/activities
1) Develop ecotourism system through organizing Eco-tourism forum, Eco-tourism training and developing Eco-tourism brochures.
2) Raise public awareness on nature conservation through combining traditional culture and modern science including Nature Watch Festival and environmental education for children
3) Establish Nyanpo Yuzee conservation network and communication mechanism through capacity building for conservation groups, study tour on Eco-tourism for government, public and NGO and outreach materials.
Anticipated results:
1) A Eco-tourism plan formulated by stakeholders, which benefit the sustainable use of 10000ha. of Alpine meadow ecosystem
2) local income increased 3,000 RMB each year through Eco-tourism training
3) 3,000 copies of travel brochures would be printed and distributed and about 10,000 people would be cultivated environmental protection knowledge, and they are expected to make behavioral changes
4) about 50 people participated in nature watch festival and help locals' income increased 900RMB
5) 20 school students received environmental education and have knowledge on 15 species conservation
6) 50 members of conservation groups' capacity enhanced and contribute to the effective conservation of 80000ha. of area
7) Through study tour, government, local community, NGO and other stakeholders reach consensus on implementation of Eco-tourism plan in Naypoo Yuzee.
