Niue Whale Research Project
Niue Whale Research Project
1. Develop and application software tool for ease of photo identification and habitat mapping of all cetacean species (including critically endangered species such as the Hawksbill turtles, endangered green turtle and vulnerable whale shark, etc.) for Niue's context in order to identify critical habitat of cetacean (and others) species allowing increased participation via naming a new whale or turtle and tracking that specific animal
2. Noting the lack of women and Pacific Island researchers generally across all biological science fields in the region, invite student participation and especially Pacific Island Niuean student apprentices in the field (adopting the UN policy or inclusion of gender/youth)
3. Creatively package an outreach awareness and interactive program that is fun and inviting for all ages (and particularly those that are disabled, elderly/too young or physically incapable of seeing marine mammals out at sea) instilling the message of conservation and education not only of marine mammal resources but the importance for the protection of ocean habitat as homes for all marine life.
4. Protect great governance and ownership of oceans health via ocean habitat protection measures
5. Assess the status and growth of Niue's whale watching tourism and the socio-economic benefits associated over a 2-year period.

Project Characteristics and Results
Policy Influence
1) Youth Members into the Oma Tafua Committee achieved. Many youths have now joined as members to Oma Tafua through the various activities performed. We have two new Committee members ? Tukala Tagelagi and Velvet from Alofi Youth both male and female for gender inclusion. 2) Whale Festival ? completed successfully. This attracted several hundred people as with generating interest for another festival. It also enhanced Oma?s reputation as with achieving further assistance to help print the Mataginifale (Niuean legend pertaining to whales) for dispersal to namely kids, but, great as a keepsake. 3) Showroom for increased awareness ? in final stages with location in capital Alofi, Niue. As part and parcel of the showroom the following have been developed: ? 360-degree virtual video created and complete. Not enough money allocated via SGP for this task. Fortunately, Niue Tourism helped achieve this component. Great opportunity for those of whom cannot experience being out on the water owing to either disabilities/elderly/physical restraints. ? Documentary video ? in final stages. To be launched at the opening of the showroom.
Notable Community Participation
1) Youth Members into the Oma Tafua Committee achieved. Many youths have now joined as members to Oma Tafua through the various activities performed. We have two new Committee members ? Tukala Tagelagi and Velvet from Alofi Youth both male and female for gender inclusion. : Increased student participation in the field of research There has been great inclusion of research students with numbers of volunteers coming from overseas however largely of non-Niuean descent. Greater interest stems from foreigners or those vested in marine sciences. It would be nice to insert as part of the school curriculum research components to allow up to 5 days at least of students to come aboard the Niue whale research vessel and undertake research methodologies with the team. Much promotion of the research comes from Oma Tafua itself as opposed to national initiative. But huge interest and participation from overseas visitors. Notwithstanding the above, exceptional attendance by individual local students to partake in several day?s research has been phenomenal with kids aged between 7-14. The invitation is an open one whereby they learn some sailing skills, data entry, behavior of marine mammals, radioing Telecom Niue ? to inform of departure and arrival times of research boats. Water skills for life onboard the boat etc. Invitations have been received by Oma Tafua also for attendance by representatives, namely President Fiafia Rex to attend the schools and teach in both vagahau Niue (native language) and in English of the project.
