Promoting Home Stay Based Eco-Tourism through Sustainable Use of Coastal Biodiversity
The location selected, Pooneryn, is one of the mostly affected regions by the civil war persisted over three decades. This region has been recently exploited heavily for the available resources due to the lack of awareness. The heavy resource utilization, especially in coastal regions, has already exposed the eco systems to vulnerability to extinction. The sand mining shall be looked as one of the examples. The community in the selected region is mostly relying on these resources for their livelihood. A proper planning and implementing a community-based conservation measure with an income generation for the local shall be one of the ideal ways to sort out the rapid depletion of the resources. The need analysis has been done with a site survey and engaged with the local. This has been done regularly over the past three years through different programmes by the Department of Zoology. These discussions paved way to select the proposal to address the major concerns of the local community.
The outcome of the project is to plant 50 ha of mangroves in the coastal area in Kavutharimunai, Poonryn and set up two new ecotourism enterprises in Kavutharimunai, Poonryn.
