Building Local Capacity on small Islands for Clean Energy home lighting for income generating through Handicraft making

The project is addressing the poor lighting sources where electricity power are lacked in remote communities and becoming a hardship women economic empowerment. The women in the local community earn income from handicraft basket but with the burden to gather do gardening and gather food to feed families in the day and taking care of disable people it is becoming a challenge to improve economic cash to meet family needs such as school fees good strong proper shelter and hence to reduce poverty within local communities. The project will provide home lighting through replacing fossil fuel lighting sources with Solar within homes f the handicraft mothers and disability.

Project Characteristics and Results

Notable Community Participation

5 local youth will be part of the technician team in the installation and maintenance of the solar system under the supervision of solar engineer expert. All local village youth of over 400 young people on the island of Futuna and Aniwa will be part of the local community awareness on global climate issues affecting local climatic conditions.

Capacity - Building Component

As a new local Community base organisation that had expereince project delivery up to 10,000USD. Capacity in procurement mass good for local community development and management of communications with local communities, suppliers for cost effective prices for quality, asset management. Communication and monitoring of results impacts from the projects.

Policy Impact

At the local level the project was implemented through an indigenous community based organisation that was now registered as an Charitable Organisation under the Vanuatu law. The community project deliveries results, impacts and lessons learnt delivery for community results and will be sharing the project results and impacts and lessons learnt with stakeholders including the National Agencies to bring to the outcome of the Vanuatu Energy Road Map and into the National Sustainable Development for Vanuatu.

Gender Focus

Major income comes form fishery and some handicraft from the women. Often most of the fishers are men who fish for family food and surplus they sell for cash income in the house. women makes basket handicraft for community social events and surplus they sent to families to be sold for cash for childrens education, health and travels. Providing the improvement to home lighting for the handicraft women can enhance their handicraft products that they can also now weave in the night using better lighting and achieving more handicraft produce to sell and hence raise family income.

Policy Influence

The Project connect the national policy into local actions that benefit the local communities through improving solar lighting, solar lighting reaching 78 households in remote communities in improving their homelighting as it the implementing the national Energy Policy, the Vanuatu Energy road Map.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The handicraft basket making done by women. Lighting will be provided to support the basket makers to improve their productivity when they will have time in the nights to do their weaving. Number of basket produced by houshold weaver will be monitored.

Linkages gef projects

The project experiences and lessons learnt will be shared by Grantees with UNDP implementing the National Project removal of Barriers to use low carbon technologies.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The project was implemented in the community with the engagement of the local community youths whom are the Solar engineers speaking the local vernacular important for the delivery of the projects into indigenous homes in particular in the discussions on the arrangement of solar installation within the women and disability families homes.

there will be a lessons learnt product on the community based promoting dissemination of low carbon technologies.
