Stabalization of Tamangdara landslide through SLM for livelihood enhancement and downstream landscape protection in Samtse Gewog
Stabalization of Tamangdara landslide through SLM for livelihood enhancement and downstream landscape protection in Samtse Gewog
The project covers two Community Forest Management group of Samtse District namely Tamangdara Community Forest and Lhakhangpong Community forest. Tamangdara CF suffers massive landslide annualy. The landside area located at 26°53?37 E and 89°66?31?? is about less than half an hour drive from Samtse town. This site is the major project site for carrying out sustainable land management activities. The total area covered by the landslide area is approximately ten acres (Google pro, 2016). There are many major landslides under Samtse Dzongkhag but the landslide at Tamangdara is closely bordered with the Tamang village and the new Samtse-Phuntsholing highway. Any more of landslide in that area in future will certainly drag down precious and limited arable lands, houses and few meters of roads. Relevant mitigation activities such as plantation, construction of checkdams, diversion of surface runoffs and fencing around the area would certainly curb the degradation as well as rehabilitate the vegetation cover. This will enhance the stability of the land and further aid in avoidance of migration of villagers. Lhakhanpong CF directly need water sources conservation activities which will benefit the villagers residing around the water sources. Illegal felling nearby water sources and frequent disturbances to water sources by domestic as well as the wild animals have caused the waters sources volume to shirk and contaminated. Therefore construction of small water tanks with barbed-wire fencing will help public to safeguard their drinking water source. It will also reduce the felling of trees around the water sources. Small pool/water outlets outside the water sources protection areas will be maintained for wild and domestic animals. Plantation will be also carried out wherever required. Relevant water user management group with appropriate by-laws will be enacted to manage, utilize and preserve the water sources sustainably. All the members the community forest group will be benefited: 1. Lhakhangpong Community Forest - 44 hhs 2. Tamangdara Community Forest - 21 hhs (Total of 65 households). The other relevant stakeholders that will be profited from such projects are forest departments, health sectors and municipal sector.

To protect critical local watershed though sound land management, awareness and institutional support to the existing Community Forest Management groups though the following interventions
? Water sources protection awareness
? Fencing of major water sources
? Writing of water sources management plans
? Plantation around water sources
? Fencing around landslide area (areas where it is frequented by the cattle and anthropogenic activities)
? Plantation on landslide area
? Creation of norms for those people inhabiting around landslide area to minimize severe anthropogenic activities.
1.3.2. Specific objectives
? Soil and land conservation
? Water sources protection
? Income generation for the group by creating by-laws. Eg. Collecting fees from water user group members, penalty for illegal activities etc.
? Boost forest cover around water sources and landslide areas
? Management of water sources for sustainable utilization
? Curb migration of settlements inhabiting above landslide area
? To induce sense of belongingness in protecting water sources and land conservation.
1.3.3. The expected outcomes from this project
? Tamangdara landslide area sustainably managed and stabilized with SLMP interventions
? Water sources conserved and protected through the two Community Fiorest groups
? Each CF will have their respective water user rules and regulation to enhance sustainable use of water and maintain sanitation.
? Every water sources will have a tank constructed to maintain hygiene.
? Fencing along landslide area will be carried out (Approximately 350 meters).
? Norms for landslide monitoring and management for the people of Tamangdara village will be enacted to protect further degradation of the area.
? Every norms and by-laws will be approved by the concern authorities.

Key activities carried out (Dec 2017-August 20, 2018)
i. In order to avoid gazing and wildlife invasion, the dedraded and landslide area was barbed wire fenced.
-Seven stone walls were constructed in order to retain rolling stones/boulders from unstable steep area within project areas.
-Terracing activities were carried out and 1,500 broom grass were planted. 10,000 stems of napier fodder grass(procured from from National Jersey Breeding Center, Samtse) was planted to enhance the stability of the landslide area.
ii. 2 days Training was conducted to Tamangdara CFMG member to impart knowledge on low cost SLMP technique
iii. 10,000 Napier stems were planted in three locations covering more than 70 decimal, and planted 1,000 broom grass seedling which was collected from nearby forest covering 40 decimal of degraded land
iv.Temporary meeting hall was constructed to conduct project related meetings and trainings. This improvised tarpaulin-covered hall will also serve as kitchen and dining hall for project members.

Once a stable and grazing area for the people living around, the area was suddenly eroded. The continuous erosion every monsoon started forming deep gullies and scratching away tonnes of arable lands. This has threatened lives and properties of people residing nearby area, and also to government structures like high tension power line and new Phuntsholing-Samtse national highway. With initiation of such project, it?s expected to lower the frequency of landslide which will ultimately stabilize the area. Planting of economically valued trees and plant like fruit trees in those areas will generate income in future through selling fruits, timber and other forest produce like fodders and broom grass, uplifting economic of the community members.

Summary of Project Current status during the reporting period
-75% barbed wire fencing completed (stretching of barbed-wire under process)
-Planted 10,000 Napier stem and 10,00 broom grass in 70 decimal and 40 decimal on degraded land respectively
-constructed temporary shed for CFMG meeting hall and also serves as kitchen and dining hall for the members.
-7 stone wall (retention wall) was constructed
-Terraces were constructed for plantation of napier cuttings.

Activities planned and completed this reporting period and results achieved.
1. Field assessment of Tamangdara landslide areas.
2. Development of Geo-spatial/GIS-based maps and materials.
3. Endorsement slide stabilization and SLM technologies and interventions by stakeholders (Terracing of degraded land and plantation of broom grass and Napier, construction of Dry stone wall and barbed wire fencing)
4. Sensitization on Tamangdara landslide and associated threats to the communities, Dzongkhag and downstream institutions.
