Promoting the Conservation of Nujiang Golden Monkey in Gaoligong Mountain through Development of Community Conserved Area
The project site is located in the surrounding area of Mt. Gaoligong National Nature Reserve, where the Nujiang Golden Monkey was found in 2010 as the world 5th Golden Monkey species. It's estimated that this species only live in a 3580km2 of small area between Nujiang River and Nmai Hka rive. In China, this monkey can be only found in the west of Nujiang River in Lushui county including the project site. There are only 1000 Nujiang Golden monkeys in the world and among them 490-620 are in China.
Main problems:
1. community hasn't conduct any conservation and capacity building project before so that community is lacking of biodiversity awareness and conservation capacity is weak; no any research and monitor on Nujiang Golden Monkey in project site;
2. destruction and fragmentation of Nujiang Golden Monkey habitats due to reclamation and low yield forest transformation; the monoculture reduces the biological diversity and lead to the more occurrence of pests and the rapid growth in the use of chemical fertilizers and other chemicals.
3. Lacking of pesticide management leads to secondary pollution.
Solutions/activities:
1. Provide capacity building to community on species monitoring and observation, develop division of community forest to reduce the human disturbance to Nujiang Golden Monkey and other wild species; develop Eco-tourism to increase local income and reduce the reclamation and disafforestation negative impacts on Monkey habitat;
2.Provide training on ICCA registry and chemical management and facilitate the local recognition of ICCAs;
3.Establish community seed bank and develop community genetic resources benefit sharing plan and demonstrate ago-forestry;
4. Establish community agricultural chemicals management system and reduce the use of pesticides;
5. Complete community conserved area brochure and share the experiences and lessons learned with local government and other stakeholders.
Anticipated results/outcomes:
1. at least 345 local people trained, 600 ha. of forest protected and the habitat of Nujiang Golden Monkey improved and community income increase 1000RMB through Eco-toursim;
2. ICCA registered and the county government developed a ICCA registry policy;
3. Community seed bank established including at least 15 seeds, 100 ha. of agroforestry promoted and zero chemical using for 100ha. of land and local income increased 680RMB;
5. Community chemical index decreased 30%
