Ngeremlengui State Important Bird Area
Ngeremlengui State Important Bird Area
Ngeremlengui State has one of the eight designated Important Bird Areas (IBA) in Palau. Referenced as the Ngerutechei IBA, it is a rich eco-diverse area covering rivers, mangroves, and forest. The Ngermeskang Swamp Forest within this IBA area is a Protected Area Network (PAN) site, following Ngeremlengui State Public Law No. 7-03. This law created the Ngermeskang Bird Sanctuary, and also declared official recognition of the whole Ngerutechei IBA for conservation management.
In line with the State?s Ngeremlengui Protected Areas Management Plan 2013-2017 and the new Ngermeskang Bird Sanctuary Management Plan 2018-2019, it is in the State?s planning as an objective to expand the PAN site beyond the Ngermeskang Swamp Forest to the old Ngerutechei village, a national registered traditional site.
Management policies and procedures for PAN member sites instills responsibility for PAN member sites to raise additional funds when needed with the goal of achieving financial sustainability. Hence, revenue generating is another objective by expanding eco-trails from Ngermeskang to Ngerutechei and developing guided tours. This is a shared benefit for Ngerutechei land owners as well as the State. In addition, it is an objective to strengthen science based conservation management practices for bird monitoring and establishing and maintaininig plant data base.
