Conservation and Management of NTFPs for sustainable livelihood through Ecosystem Approach

The project will be implemented for strengthening the groups for adoption of the technologies for Tendu and Bamboo management and value addition with up-gradation of honey processing unit to maintain quality parameters. The main objective of the project is:
- Initiate people centric income generation activities.
- Strengthen community based organization for efficient forest management to promote livelihood based on forest produces.
- Up-gradation of honey processing unit to maintain quality enhancement.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

20 artisans from 3 villages will be capacitated on making valued added bamboo products. 500 tendu patta collectors from 8 villages will be aware and capacitated on NTFP based entrepreneurship, controlling of bush cutting and control of forest fire.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

5 days? workshop for 20 bamboo artisans in pachpohor village giving them skills for value addition in bamboo products.

Gender Focus

Community themselves manage the bamboo depo and Gramsabha is engaged in all level of implementation. Community participation will be ensured by handing over maximum responsibility of actual implementation on the Gram Sabha / sub-committee of Gram Sabha. Women will actively participate in overall income generation activities. The project will give emphasis on formation and strengthening of the local institutions of honey collectors and gum collectors. The trained local artisans will disseminate the knowledge to other artisans in the villages. Key leaders will be identified and selected from project villages and will be given in-depth training on the proposed activities to be done.

GSMT is in a process to raise fund from various sources for further upscaling.

Project sustainability

GSMT mobilized SHGs and local gramsabha for this bee business Gramsabhas monitor this activity to sustain their livelihood. GSMT conducted business plan preparation training for honey activity, which helps community for establishment of honey processing unit and gum processing unit

Policy Influence

GSMT works with the State Government to promote honey processes in allover the country to take care of bees for production of honey and pollination. Also number of farmers accessed forest right is increasing through the project intervention.

Replication of project activities

Government Organizations such as National Bank for Agriculture and Rural development (NABARD) , Khadi Village Industries and other private institutes come forward and replicate the activities

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Media will cover the project details to effectively spread the information in the adjoining villages. IEC material will be developed on Honey and Gum.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Project is linked to tribal area priorities. The project aims at conservation and management of NTFP for sustainable livelihood through Ecosystem approach. 300 indigenous people who are engaging in bamboo collection will be benefited.

Policy Impact

The actual implementation of the project will be done with guidance and support of the Gram Sabha. The project is based on the long-term development plan of the villages and their outcomes will be used as management plans of forest and biodiversity prepared as a part of Community Forest Rights processes.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The main aim of the project is to strengthen the community based organizations for efficient forest management, promote honey collection, tendu patta and bamboo conservation and value addition. One existing hone processing unit will be upgraded with technological implements such as honey storage drum, honey storage platform and honey test kit. The project activities will generate income for the honey and gum harvester.

Project Results

1) A honey collectors workshop was organised inviting participants from 5 NGOs, Dr. Gopal Paliwal from Centre for Bee development guided collectors and professionals on sustainable collection and best practices of honey processing
2) The honey processing facility at Jalka established under previous project has been upgraded by improving the construction so that maintaining hygienic conditions will be easier, few newer instruments were added. This was visited by representative of MoEFCC? during the beekeeping workshop
3) A new unit at Panchpor village has been set up with help of Gram Sabha, The whole equipment set has been purchased from Dr. Gopal Paliwal and is installed in the centre, the centre will be operational in this collection season.

4) A total of 189 households are benefited from these units in the initial months and the number will go up once the unit is set up will marketing linkages well established.

5) Though honey collection has traditionally been a male dominated occupation and still remains to be so, conscious efforts are being taken to involve women SHG in processing and marketing of collected honey.
