Moringa enterprise for better health of coastal communities in Badin
Core objective of the project:
The main objective of the project is to promote moringa tree cultivation in Badin district through moringa enterprise development

Specific objectives of the intervention:
1. Promoting community based moringa enterprises in Badin district
2. Awareness raising on use of moringa products for treatment of health and malnutrition issues in Badin district

6 growers will be supported to establish commercial moringa farm and develop an enterprise to produce and sell the moringa products to the traditional healers and other purchasers within district. Along with this, larger number of moringa trees (produced from established moringa nursery) will be distributed among 1000 community members so that they also start producing moringa production, use at home for treatment of health and malnutrition, and scale up the cultivation through multiplying the quantity of trees in order to sell the surplus production into the market. the demand of moringa products use will be created through a set of marketing activities of the project.


Details of the activities proposed under the project are as below:
1. Establishment of community based moringa enterprise:
Moringa farm will be established on 2 acres, an MoU has already been signed with the growers and Agriculture university Tandojam has already been on board for technical advisory services. Land preparation will be done by the growers and mature saplings will be provided from the project. A total of 24,000 saplings will be cultivated on the farm. The growers will be provided proper training on how to cultivate and manage the farm.

2. Establishment of moringa nursery
A nursery of moringa trees will be established on 0.5 acres land where 26,000 tree saplings will be raised. Community will provide the land and nursery establishment expenses will be contributed from the project. Black diamond seed of moringa will be cultivated on the nursery. A Gardner will be hired in the project who will take care of the nursery. The nursery will be handed over to the related grower in order to continue it as an enterprise.

3. Training of growers and women on moringa cultivation and products preparation
A total of two training series will be organized for the growers and the women. Growers will be provided a comprehensive training on ?establishing community based moringa enterprise?. Technical experts will be hired from Agriculture Department and Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam for this training. Another training will be organized for 20 women from the farmer community on how to prepare moringa powder.

4. Cooking demonstration with communities having malnourished cases
Keeping in view the high GAM rates of malnutrition in Badin, and potential of moringa to solve the malnutrition issues, cooking demonstration will be organized in one village of Badin in order to sensitize and trained the mothers of the malnourished children about how to prepare and utilize moringa. The village will be suggested from Nutrition Support Program of Government of Sindh, hotspot village will be selected which has GAM rate more than 15% (because >15% GAM rate is the threshold is the cut off to initiate immediate actions, set out by World Health Organization). Female staff of the project will be engaged to lead the cooking demonstration. The field staff of NSP of Government of Sindh will also be invited to be part of the cooking demonstration. This activity will help to promote the use of moringa for malnutrition treatment in Badin.

5. Awareness of communities through media campaign and IEC material
Communities of Badin will be provided awareness about benefits of moringa products for various diseases. This will be done through circulating key messages through FM Radio and IEC material. The same IEC material will also be provided to NSP of Government of Sindh in Badin so that they may also help in promoting the concept. Along with this, various displays will be organized in Badin city to promote the benefits of moringa product. Marketing officer of the project will take lead on this activity.
