Promoting Food Security and Sustainable Livelihood of Farming Communities through Creation of a Value Chain of Moringa Oleifera
The proposed project is actually a multi-faceted activity, ranging from knowledge transfer, capacity building, technical facilitation to create a value chain and entrepreneurship development, amongst the farming communities of our target area, particularly to ensure sustainable livelihood and food security, through growing and marketing of Moringa Oleifera. The said project is also focusing on two Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), number 2 and 15. As SDG No. 2, is a global agenda, for ending hunger, achieving food security, improved nutrition and promotion of sustainable agriculture, whilst SDG 15 is all about ?life on land?, and recommends protection, restoration and promotion of sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainable management of forests, combating desertification, and reversal of land degradation and stopping of the loss of biodiversity. GCO would not just going to motivate the community, for protection of local flora and fauna but it will also equip the local farmers, for adoption of sustainable income generation sources, especially, through agro-forestry. Other project objectives and activities are as follow:
Objective 1: Knowledge transfer and management, for adoption of balanced landscape approach to reconcile the plantation of Moringa Oleifera , amongst the farming communities
Planned Activities:
1. Project inception ceremony, for the stakeholders, officials of relevant line departments, civil society?s activists, and project team about roadmap, framework and desired results of the project interventions
2. Translation (in local language - Urdu), compilation and publication of available applied researches, on nutritional, medicinal and commercial value of Moringa Oleifera, to enhance the knowledge and expertise of potential growers
3. Mapping and documentation of existing plantation, types and sources of Moringa Oleifera within Punjab Province
4. Online availability of researches, mapping and consultancy about Moringa Oleifera , through organizational website and facebook account
5. Printing and dissemination IEC material, (8000 copies of brochures and pamphlets), for education and information of potential growers of Moringa Oleifera , about its cultivation and creation of value chain
Objective 2: Capacity Building of small farmers about ?Cultivation of Moringa Oleifera and Preparation of its Products as an Environment-friendly and Sustainable Income Generation Source?
Planned Activities:
1. Facilitation of two 9-day training workshops in two surrounding union councils of Abbasia Forest, Chani Goth (Rahim Yar Khan District) on ?Moringa Plantation, Care and Preparation of its Marketable Products? for a total of 60 participants (50 women and 10 men farmers - each workshop would be held for 30 participants, for a total of 9 days, 3-day in a month and with a period 3 months)
Objective 3: Creation of a value chain and entrepreneurship mechanism, of Moringa Oleifera , to facilitate the farmers and consumers, to assure livelihood, food and nutritional security
Planned Activities:
1. Setting up of a multi-dimensional ?Moringa Resource Center? in Lahore, as a research and publication unit, nursery, seedling and seed bank along with marketing cell of Moringa?s products. (This has been envisaged in view of the efficacy in dissemination and gaining advantage of existing GCO presence in the provincial capital.)
2. Plantation of a total of 60000 Moringa Oleifera in 50 acres (1200 trees per acre), of Abbasia Forest, Chani Goth (Rahim Yar Khan District) with the practical involvement of workshop participants
3. Setting-up of ?Moringa Entrepreneurship Development Center? with a nursery, seedling and seed bank and marketing cell in Abbasia Forest, Chani Goth (Rahim Yar Khan District) for developing entrepreneurial trends amongst local farmers
4. Purchase of Moringa products by GCO, from famers of project area, on existing market price, for marketing and sale amongst potential consumers, customers, traders, hakims and exporter, to supplement grower?s income and for sustainability of Resource Center, nursery and seed bank at Lahore

? Up-to-date applied research, on nutritional, medicinal and commercial value of Moringa Oleifera , for knowledge transfer and management among the potential growers
? Mapping of Moringa Oleifera through GPS to ensure the access of farmers towards sources and linkages
? State of the art Moringa Resource Center in Lahore, as a research and publication unit, nursery, seedling and seed bank along with marketing cell of Moringa?s products
? Trained and well-equipped cadre of 60 farmers (50 women farmers and 10 men growers) about plantation care and preparation of Moringa products, in Rahim Yar Khan District
? Plantation of a total of 60000 Moringa trees on the area of 50 acres Abbasia Forest
? Emergence of marketing cell in Lahore and Rahim Yar Khan Districts for strengthening and sustainability of Moringa Value Chain and Entrepreneurship Development Center
