Promoting Sustainable Water Supply by Rain Water Harvesting and accessing strong Ground Water
Participatory rural development project will be implemented in Lawrence College Ghora Gali Murree. To have a stable and sustainable supply of water ? commonly referred to as water security ? is central to efforts both to adapt to the effects of climate change, and to mitigate rising greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is the prime objective of project. Project objectives includes:
1. To promote adoption of sustainable water supply by installing rainwater harvesting systems in Lawrence college.
2. To access ground water by drilling a bore well or constructing a water reservoir for storage of water as feasible by survey team.
3. Awareness campaign by organizing a workshop on rainwater harvesting
Objective 1: To promote adoption of sustainable water supply by installing rainwater harvesting system.
Activities:
? Consultation meetings with the college administration
? Mapping and survey of the area and selection of sites for installing rainwater harvesting systems
? Engaging contractor for fixing sheets on three buildings roof in order to hold water and snow
? Procuring six water tanks for 400 gallons
? Engaging contractor fixing pipes from roof to water tanks and onward supply of water
Objective 2: To access ground water by drilling a bore well or constructing water reservoir for storage of water
Activities:
? Arranging a survey team from PCRWR for selection of site for ground water access
? Drilling a bore well or constructing a water reservoir according to the PCRWR survey report
? Arrange a contractor for drilling or constructing a water reservoir as feasible.
Objective 3: Awareness campaign by organizing a workshop on rainwater harvesting
Activities:
? Organizing a workshop in Murree or in Islamabad for awareness on rainwater harvesting.
? Development of IEC material, brochure and poster on harvesting rainwater for awareness of community
Project Deliverables:
Following deliverables will be achieved after implementation of project activities.
? Installed three rainwater harvesting systems in college vicinity for sustainable water supply.
? Either one bore well drilled or a big water reservoir constructed as feasible according to PCRWR survey report.
? 100 households sensitized through awareness campaign by organizing a workshop on rainwater harvesting
? IEC material developed
Project will target the Lawrence college that require water for bathroom, washing, laundry and watering plants. In dry season, the Lawrence college and its surrounding population face hardship in getting water for their use. In the absence of water, plants die out and are replanted with start of next season. Plantation help reduction in GHG emissions and increase in carbon storage as the plants are the great source for that.
The project is mainly focused in collecting rainwater which is drained out without any use. As mentioned above, this water can be used for various purposes like irrigation, washing, cleaning and animal husbandry, etc.
Result based process monitoring mechanisms and tools will be developed for the project monitoring. SMART indicators would be developed for the monitoring of the processes as well as achievements of the project with the use of quantitative and qualitative indicators. SMART indicators would be developed for the monitoring of the process as well as achievements of the project with the use of quantitative and qualitative indicators. For that purpose clear role and responsibilities would be assigned to the relevant teams, responsible for field monitoring and reporting the monitoring process.
