The Barbadian Medicinal Plants: Development of College Land, St. John into an herbal Health and Wellness Tourism Destination
To establish a collaborative team between UWI, Codrington College and the community of College Land to document, preserve and cultivate medicinal plants historically and currently used to treat ailments in Barbados.
Objectives: To identify at least (5) medicinal plants in Barbados, specifically in College Land, St. John, by documenting the geographical and horticultural attributes of the plants? natural habitat. 2. To publish in print and online the inventories of these medicinal plant names in the form of word lists and glossaries in all the official languages of the Caribbean, namely English, Spanish, French and Dutch. 3. To validate the medicinal effects of these medicinal plants by efficacy and safety testing. 4. Develop a pilot programme to cultivate these plants to preserve the natural resources and for product development. 5. To develop and test a marketing plan for at least (3) medicinal plants in collaboration with reputable companies into acceptable functional foods, nutraceuticals and cosmeceuticals. 6. To plan the layout and develop 2 kilometers of land at College Land, St. John into an arboretum, including clearing for trails and pathways.

Replication of project activities
Continue working with the OGCA and UWI to document and voucher the medicinal plants found in the College Land area.
Have discussions with the Business Development Officer at the UWI to pursue product development.
Continue working with the OGCA to expand the medicinal gardens with a wider variety of plants.
Partner with other persons/organizations to develop goods for sale from medicinal plants cultivated.
Planning of phase two of the hiking trails and arboretum have started. This includes the installation of look out points, seating, signage, additional trails.
Provide certificate training (CVQ or TVET) for at least three (3) community members on product development. (An initial contact was made with IICA in August 2021, which needs to be followed up on).
