Economic Tree Crop Planting and Beekeeping for Sustainable Environmental Protection and Management Through Climate Smart Agricultural Practices For The Increase Of Carbon Sink And Control Land Degradation
The project being proposed aims to address poor land management practices leading to land degradation and the erosion of potential arable land for agricultural productivity. The primary objective of this project is to increase the capacity of 450 beneficiaries in three targeted farming communities (Maron, Madina loko, and Robat) in Sanda Loko Chiefdom in Bombali District. Lands through appropriate climate smart agricultural practices, capacity development and climate change adaptation measures to be implemented by the different Youth groups under this apex body.

In the achievement of this objective, this project will focus on alternative livelihood practices through training that will Support sustainability through rural finance- the rural poor have access to reliable and sustainable livelihood and financial services (Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs)-group of 25-30 people mostly women dominated will save together and take small loans from those savings. The activities of the association run in ?cycles? of about one year, after which the accumulated savings and the loan profits are shared out (Action Audit) among the members according to amount they saved). Beekeeping, vegetable production and integrated rice-fish pond farming as an immediate livelihood support to the project.

This will help to strengthen the way in which communities are destroying their forest land in seeking livelihood to feed their families, damages cause due to negative agricultural practices such as slash and burning will be well handled through capacity building and the introduction of new and appropriate farming techniques using the climate smart agriculture initiative. The activities of this project will also strengthen community information flow in terms of best practices amongst members of the different groups and it will facilitate field trips to the different sites of the members? crop farm.

The significant of implementing such an initiative is to provide practical solution at the community level to be able to tackle climate change through the demonstration of practices on climate smart agriculture that can be replicable into a bigger scale, initiatives of reforestation will continue to improve on land degradation, swamp development to increase productivity and discourage the idea of upland farming especially Tobacco and Rice crop cultivation which had caused negative effects .to the environment and has resulted depletion of soil nutrients. The project will build on synergy and because it is community owned there will be greater community commitment in terms of local contributions. The income generating activities will be assessed at the end of the 12 months at impact level.

The climate smart agriculture concept will be based on the principles of Farmer Field School(FFS) Methodology were in farmers are given the opportunity to gain new knowledge and transfer applicable technology through demonstration illustrations to be replicated by the farmers in a later period. They will have different plots for demonstration and commercial purposes to enhance replication. The organization will use its long term coordinating relationship with key government structure like MAFFS and local authorities to support the effective deliverable of set objectives that has to do with transfer of farmer?s knowledge in the areas of land reforestation, crop production etc. The knowledge management strategy and plan objective is to ensure that the project support capacity of the target beneficiaries of 450 individuals with the ability of increase replication to some of the indirect beneficiaries. The methodology is based on demonstration to build confidence of the farmers to be able to take the technology somewhere else and replicate.
