Conservation and sustainability of natural resources.
Muzeya Women?s Cooperative is located in Ikelenge District, North Western Province of Zambia. For over 20 years, residents have depended on their forests and its products for a living and hence experienced an increased depletion of forest products. This is as a result of the high levels of illiteracy among the residents and a fast growing population.
Most of the people depend on forest activities such as bee keeping, caterpillar collection and Chikanda among others for a living and with the increase in population, Muzeya has seen a rise in demand for more land and forests. Mostly production activities are unsanctioned and because of this most of the forests including protected lands have been encroached in search for these economic activities. Most residents are now unable to send their children to school especially when they reach secondary level due to high school fees against their low income and as a results, girls and boys are entering into early marriages. Teenage pregnancies have risen up amongst school going children, because of this, there has been an increase in the number of girls dropping out of school and even if they deliver parents no longer see the importance of taking the girl child back to school.
Droughts are among the factors that have affected Muzeya community due to climatic change, rivers and streams are drying up in the winter such that farming has become difficult threatening the food security in the area.
In order to diversify economic activities, reduce the depletion of the forests and alleviate povery, Muzeya women?s Multipurpose cooperative has come up with a project of pineapple and Chikanda plantations. The project will run for two years and is expected to benefit about 900 people of the entire community. The project which is viewed as the conservation and sustenance of natural resources will emphasis on; Careful means in the utilization and production of natural resources and, enabling youths, women and children to reach their full potential through empowerment, material and social support.
This project will be executed by the members of the community and will hence facilitate increased community participation since the plants are well known for their drought resistance. The project site will be along Kanyisamba stream because of the fertile land which is ideal for both Chikanda and Pineapples plantation. The two plants have been preferred for their potential to improve the water system and their drought residence characteristics. The plants have roots that are able to pull the water from the ground and are able to produce fruits either in winter or summer. Pineapples plants have the potential improve the water system in the air and also help in reducing the negative impact of climatic change and because of this the area will be likely to experience a positive climate change which will improve the rain pattern.
Main Project Objective is to Promote the Utilization of natural resource by promoting biodiversity through the production of Pineapples and Chikanda
