Climate Smart Technology and Watershed Management for Improved Health and Environment
Climate Smart Technology and Watershed Management for Improved Health and Environment
Communities in the Xiengme village cluster in Saysomboun Province have limited access to clean water. Gravity feed schemes in the area need to be repaired and although they can provide water it can become contaminated at the system or household level. The watershed and local environment is at risk from poor hygiene and sanitation practices. Many households are boiling water to produce clean drinking water. This involves many hours of labor for female members of the household who are mostly responsible for collecting wood, preparing fires and boiling water. This practice exposes people to high levels of smoke which is very unhealthy and is very environmentally detrimental. The project will help to proposes promoting household water filters as an alternative to the labor intensive, environmentally negative and unhealthy practice of boiling water. Hygiene champions will be trained in hygiene and sanitation behavior change to improve behaviors of their fellow villagers and reduce the risk of contamination of the environment and watershed.

This project will expand on the success of the previous project by training school teachers of five villages to become trainers in hygiene and sanitation using visualized posters and laminated cards. The students will learn about waterborne disease, proper hand washing, accessing to clean drinking water and appropriate hygiene and sanitation.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Before starting the project inception meeting will take place at community, district and province level to ensure that the project aims, activities and stakeholder involvement is discussed and understood by all those involved.
