For the community of Avano there was little hope after the two cyclones. For years they wanted to clean up but they lacked the resources. A place that they had gathered together for decades was gone and there was little they could do. Then in 2016 the community came across an opportunity, an advertisement that asked communities to put forward environmental proposals that would benefit their communities. For the chiefs of Avano, it was a ray of hope. They applied to rehabilitate the natural pool. It was a proposal that made the cut. The community received US $20 thousand from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Program administered by the UN Development Programme (UNDP).

Most of the labour works for the projects are done by young matai the community. Concrete mixing and pouring of mixing concrete into the boxes around the pool. Clearing of the mud from the pool. Women also played important roles in the project implementation. Replanting of the trees and flowers around the pool. Monitor the pools in order to maintain the beauty of the site once the project is completed.

Now with the water clean and the pool in good use, the community plans to make the pool at tourist attraction in order to raise funds to help maintain the pool and sustain the environment around it.

Project is sustainable in a way that the reconstructed fresh water pool can keep providing positive impacts on the community.

The fresh water pool is extremely important source of water for the community. This project can be used for swimming pool not only for the people in the village but also for the tourist. Additionally, they can wash their clothes in the pool instead of doing it at their house so they can save water bills.
