PARTICIPATORY AND INCLUSIVE PLANNING AND IMPLMENTATION: A Capacity Enhancement Approach for Community Resilience & Sustainable Development in West Kilimanjaro – Lake Natron Ecosystem.
Project?s primary objective:

To enhance adaptive capacities of local and indigenous communities in West Kilimanjaro with the view to promoting community resilience against climate change.
Secondary objectives:
? Promote appropriate ecosystem management through landscape planning
? Mainstreaming gender in climate smart actions
Implementation strategies:
? Deepening the understanding of climate and poverty reduction relevant policies and plans (NEP-2015, NFYDP- 2016/2021, and ACRP- 2014?2019) to district and village and what they mean in Western Kilimanjaro-Lake Natron ecosystem context;

? Education, awareness, and engagement activities intended to help communities understand climate change risks and develop activities that build their adaptive capacities including sustainable livelihoods and diversification (this will include application of PICSCO);

? Enhancing the understanding/knowledge then develop village development strategy and demonstrate its implementation under participatory selected pilot activities;

? Enhancing capacity of existing innovative and alternative means of incomes that integrates landscape planning and use and development with appropriate ecosystem management; and

? Gender mainstreaming in climate smart actions and natural ecosystems management and use.

Project sustainability strategies:
In order to ensure sustainability of the project, the following will be prioritized:
? Active involvement of women, men and youths will be encouraged and facilitated at all times
? Use of local conservation methods and technologies that are known by the local communities
? Establishing community based ecosystem management committees and capacitating them in terms of expertise and conservation resources.
Anticipated project results:
? Relevant national policies and plans are understood and reflected in development strategies and activities of local communities
? Rural communities have been trained and empowered on alternative income sources/activities, climate and weather information, sustainable learning-by doing practices, sustainable natural resource use and Lake Ecosystem management as well as understood key components of the environmental and natural resource conservation.
? Smallholder farmers, women and pastoralists resilience and livelihood have been improved
