Belau Stone Paths Circuit: Sustaining Biodiversity, Cultural Heritage, and Communities in Babeldaob, Palau
Belau Stone Paths Circuit: Sustaining Biodiversity, Cultural Heritage, and Communities in Babeldaob, Palau
According to existing oral history documentation, traditional Palauan communities had a high
regard for the art of stone construction. Palauans used stones to construct most of the structures in
their villages. In ancient times, stone paths were constructed to connect village homes to each other
and to the main bai at the village square. Stone paths also connected homes to bathing places, taro
patches, docks and landing places by the docks, and out to the hills where entrances into the village
were usually located. They led to resting places that were entrances into and exit points out of the
traditional villages. Thus a touristic circuit of well-preserved stone paths throughout Babeldaob
Island will provide an opportunity for visitors to learn about the traditional practices, history, and
stories associated with traditional village life.

The Project will focus on recognized sites in the states of Ngaraard, Ngchesar and Ngiwal states,
as state leaders have demonstrated interest in and the most ?aptitude? for preserving and
responsibly developing sites to benefit their communities.

The Project activities in these states will focus on preserving, interpreting, and managing
identified cultural and historical sites that can drive and service the targeted low-impact, high-value
tourist demand. The Project will also support the restoration and protection of surrounding
terrestrial environments (endemic plants and trees) to protect biodiversity and enhance the
attractiveness of the destination.
