The Establishment of a Network of Sustainable Eco Friendly Youth Aquaponics Facilities which contribute to Food and Nutritional Security in Saint Lucia

This project will introduce aquaponics to a network of at least three to four youth groups whose members wish to contribute to food and nutritional security while creating new income opportunities. During the PG phase, the design of the aquaponics facility will be completed and there will be training workshops. The final FG proposal will be based on research and feasible options.

Project Characteristics and Results

Replication of project activities

At this stage in the project cycle, the grantee designed three sizes of systems and prepared the financial analysis of each. Any group or individual who wishes to implement such a project, can purchase a package which comes with technical assistance.

Project sustainability

The financial analysis proved that the project was viable and would be reducing its carbon footprint through solarisation. It was also clear that there was effective demand for the organic outputs.

Capacity - Building Component

The group is on its second project and the members are well supported by IICA and GEF SGP UNDP. No capacity needs have been identified at this stage.

Policy Influence

The project designed for demonstration plans for the improved management and substantial solarisation of the first medium scale aquaponics facility in Saint Lucia.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

This phase of the project will establish the feasibility of managing each facility in preparation for the FG phase when new employment options will emerge.

Notable Community Participation

This project will focus solely on youth groups and will help to build their capacity in designing and implementing workable aquaponics facilities.

Project Results

The three main results were as follows: (i) The financial viability was confirmed; (iii) Design options at different scales were available for replication; and (iii) the basis for replication at a national scale was established.

Eight persons (4 men and 4 women) were employed earning a total of US$2048 (US$1667 men and US$381 women).

Four persons (3 men and 1 woman) were trained in aquaponics operations.

Finally, the Full Grant Project Proposal was designed with the following components: (i) Improvement in existing systems for greater efficiency; (ii) Solarization to reduce carbon footprint and reduce average cost of production; and (iii) Marketing and Public Education.
