Support to rural community sustainable development through innovative renewable energy models

The project main aim is the demonstration of ways to involve the community in the implementation of low carbon technologies and related benefits for the community.

Major activities of the project include:
1. Wide awareness campaign among small and medium urban and rural communities in the SGP landscape.
2. Implementation of low carbon project on climate change mitigation ? installation of energy efficient lightening systems in the villages.
3. Development of a package of recommendations for communities on legal regulation of "Green Tariff Scheme" based on practical experience.
4. Organization of seminar, where development and replication potential of the project should be presented and discussed.
5. Project ensures women?s participation and strengthening their role in all stages of project implementation.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

A project informational campaign was conducted in order to inform the local community about the benefits of using alternative energy: a printed informational booklet was published and distributed, and 4 articles were published in the media on the effectiveness of implementing the project results. In addition, 1 public hearing and 1 seminar for promoting the use of alternative energy for the needs of the community were held.

Gender Focus

Gender equality is a part of project policy and all parties participate in project activities on equal base and benefit from project results.

Project sustainability

Novouspenivka consolidated community was registered, which also included 3 village councils: Matviivska, Tavriyska, and Zaporizka. Modernized street lighting systems Novouspenivka and Novoivanivka allow to save costs, which will be used for modernization of the street lighting in the other villages - territorial units of the Novouspenivka community.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Spreading information about using alternative energy and how it improves life of the community (saves costs for the other needs, increases the level of life and health of community citizens), and raising awareness of the community about climate change and benefits of renewable energy usage are achieved by sharing informational materials, presentations and other public events.

Project Results

The project "Support to rural community sustainable development through innovative renewable energy models" was aimed at demonstrating ways to involve the community in the implementation of low carbon technologies and related benefits for the community.

First of all, a unique circuit of autonomous lighting was developed taking into account the features of Veselivsky district, Zaporizhya oblast, for modernization of the street lighting system in villages Novouspenivka and Novoivanivka, 2 work projects were prepared and the street lighting was modernized by installing 28 autonomous systems, which allowed to light 24.65 km of streets.

This modernization of the village street lighting reduced electricity consumption by 14.22 MW annually; emissions of CO2 - by 15,3576 tons annually, expenses of the community for the electric energy - by 359 thousand UAH annually, which positively affected climate change, livelihood, health of the citizens and allowed to spend saved money for the other needs of community.

In order to raise public awareness about the topic the informational leaflet "Autonomous Lighting System" was developed and printed in the amount of 500 copies, which clearly demonstrates the benefits of using solar energy for outdoor lighting.

In addition, public events, such as a public hearing for promoting the use of alternative energy for the needs of the community was held on 13.12.2017 in Novouspenivka village. Also, a seminar "Bright streets" was held on 27.12.2017 in order to give an overview of the use of alternative energy for the community of the region. In total, the audience of public events was 157 people.

A project informational campaign was conducted in order to inform the local community about the benefits of using alternative energy: a printed informational booklet (300 copies) was published and distributed, and 4 articles were published in the media on the effectiveness of implementing the project results.

A number of new partnerships have been established: Novouspenivka and Novoivanivka village councils, the All-Ukrainian newspaper "Development and Environment", NGOs "Clean environment of Zaporizhya", "Biological shield", "Ecological network", "Wide step" etc.
