Plantation of honey plants to promote planted bee pasture and livestock forage base
A bee pasture will be established by planting honey plants in 67 hectares of the protected forest strip owned by 22 CBOs in Selenge, Khentii, Bulgan, Tuv, Darkhan-Uul aimags. 15-20 kg of honey is collected from one bee colony in Mongolia?s bee pasture, compared to 120-150 kg in neighbouring Buryatia of the Russian Federation. Therefore, the CBOs are planning to increase bee pasture resources by planting several varieties of honey plants in their owned forest estate and harvesting them in autumn for livestock forage. The project is also important for the purpose of pasture protection and reduction of soil degradation. The NSC members advised the CBOs to match prices with honey quality, obtain expert advice and preserve the local ecosystem intact in the course of growing honey plants in view of regional specifics.
