Sustainable Micro-Hydro through energizing rural enterprises and Livelihoods

The project emphasizes on Participatory Market System Development (PMSD) for ensuring the sustainability of the new initiatives. This involves building a cadre of rural entrepreneurs to streamline the cash flow for sustenance of the MHPs by running the micro enterprises based on the MHP energy at one hand and strengthening the economic backbone of more than 500 households by reducing the drudgery and related economic loss. This will improve governance and create productive demand for power during the day leading to increased load factors and financial viability of MHPs. The project will improve the reliability of power production of 30KW & 10KW electricity from 2 MHPs (one in Badamanjari of Semiliguda block of koraput district, Odisha and another in Bonjangi of Paderu sub-division of Andhra Pradesh).

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

Capacity will be build of the project team to implement the project work in gender sensitive manner. MHP committees promoted in both the sites through a series of capacity building programs will be capacitated and will be able to make minor repair and maintenance of the MHPs.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Evidence will be collected and disseminated on energizing sustainable rural livelihood. All the efforts will be taken for upward and downward communication of the results through electronic and print media. The learnings and best practices will be documented and shared with the key stakeholders.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Participatory market system mapping will be done in the first phase of the project. A sub-sector analysis will be carried-out to identify potential enterprises. Detail study will be carried-out of selected products/enterprises using PMSD approach. Mapping will be done and information will be collected on three main levels of market chain, including the MHP management committee, MHP turbine and other parts manufacturing companies as well as the end users, supporting services and inputs. Multi-stakeholder analysis will be done in the entire market chain and appropriate steps will be taken to ensure meaningful partnership between the nurtured entrepreneurs and established market players. Workshops, seminars and exposure visits will be organized for sharing the achievements of the project.

Policy Impact

The NGO will tie up with one of the leading consultancy group on renewable energy, M/S. Desi Technologies Solutions, Bhubaneswar, for meeting the day to day technical services for the project. It will link with Practical Action for supporting the rehabilitation of the defunct MHPs through its technical expertise. Efforts will be taken for linking regular markets in locality and with the state capital.

Gender Focus

The project will adopt a community driven participatory approach in planning, executing operate and maintain/operate the energy systems and enterprises in all stages of the project. The entrepreneurs will be participating in various Melas and Exhibitions for promoting their produces in and outside the state. The local SHGs will be involved in the business model where they will be the providers of raw materials or they can be the part of the marketing channel of the finished or semi-finished produce.

The project will be implemented in primitive tribal belt and un-reached area.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project will emphasize on Participatory Market System Development (PMSD) for ensuring the sustainability of the new initiatives. This will involve building cadre of rural entrepreneurs to streamline the cash-flow for sustenance of the MHPs by running the micro enterprises based on MHP energy on one hand and strengthening the economic backbone of more than 500 households by reducing the drudgery and related economic loss. It will improve efficiency of electricity production & distribution of Electricity to a total of 250 House Holds for Light Purpose through system analysis and operations improvement. The project will envisage a business model for ensuring sustainability of MHPs along with sustaining livelihoods. Increase utilization of electricity through productive use applications leading to financial stability.

Project sustainability

The villagers use electricity for household and irrigation purposes and also use for running community managed micro-enterprising units such as rice & flour mill, turmeric processing units and millet de-husking unit.

Project Results

? 500 tribal households in the remote villages accessed electrify through the installation of Micro Hydro Project in two sites: Badamanjari and Narayan Patna.
? Micro Hydro Project Committees were formed at village level and built their capacity in management and repairing and maintenance of MHPs. The committee consisted of skilled and trained youth who engage in repairing and maintenance as well as the management of entire MHP systems installed.
? Ensured reliable distribution of power from both sites: Badamanjari(30 KW) and Narayan Patna(10 KW) and smoothened the production of electricity by installing new turbines.

? Community Youth enterprising models are functional in the project villages. The rice& flour mill of 16Ftx 20 Ft being managed by the MHP caters the need of 11 nearby villages and revenue collected is using for service and maintenance of the MHP. Approximately 30 quintals of paddy being processed in the Badamanjari unit every week.

? Built the capacity of the village committees on operation, repair and maintenance of MHPs and electricity based rural enterprises.

? Reduced the use of kerosene and hence reduction of CO2 emission to the atmosphere.

? MHP committee in both villages have been managed by a Village Committee of 10 members and each committee could mobilise Rs 50000/- which is kept in the bank for further maintenance of the MHP

? Korpaut Farmers Association(KFA) is in the process of developing community based agro-forestry model through which the adverse impact of shifting cultivation(slash and burn) cultivation will be addressed. The agro-forestry model promotes 3 tier terrace cultivation with three different crops: Timber plantation( upper layer), horticrops( middle layer) and agriculture crops( lower layer)
