Renewable Energy based rural livelihood promotion in Keonjhar district of Odisha

The project demonstrates effective use of renewable energy in livelihood enterprises pertaining to horticulture and poultry thereby increasing livelihoods of women entrepreneurs and increase climate change adaptability among them in order to mitigate. The major scalability feature would be the use of solar pumps in the hilly areas where conventional electricity has not reached and the cost effectiveness of vegetable cultivation in long run.

Project Characteristics and Results

Gender Focus

Community will be involved in each activities like awareness generation, demonstration of solar energy use in horticulture and poultry livelihood development sector. PRI members will be involved in planning along with the SHGs. Women will play pivotal role in poultry an inter cropping in case of horticulture. Involvement of women will be there in the project right from the beginning. Women SHG members especially the Juanga women who are semi literate will be trained on documentation and sensitized to keep record of all the changes taking place in the group related to reduction of cost of production and quality growth of chicks due to ventilators and PV lights used in business units. 20 village volunteers will be equipped to maintain the existing and promote the solar energy in villages. All the materials that will be set up/ installed at community level will be done in consultation with people.

Project sustainability

From the beginning of the project it was made mandatory that the major components of the project i.e. construction of poultry house will be covered from JDA as convergence and post project support to others will also be provided from SCA to TSP funds of ITDA. We have also trained community people to monitor the business establishment by women and do the minor repairing in solar equipment on payment basis. Besides this the project was converged with NABARD WADI project and OPELIP project supported by JDA. In both the projects existing staffs are their till 2021 and they have also been trained on clean energy. People are getting the interim profits from intercrops inside the WADI and keeping monthly contribution for maintenance of equipment. Women have been trained on marketing aspects which allowed them to operate with market.

Capacity - Building Component

Knowledge of 1000 people will be build through training and peer sensitization on use of clean energy and promote solar operated equipment to mitigate climate change. Capacity building and awareness activities will be conducted for community on efficient energy use. Capacity building and exposure visits will also be organized for the staff (3 project staff and 7 non project staff) on renewable energy. 30 SHGs i.e. 360 beneficiaries (268 direct and 260 indirect) will be linked with ITDA and provided training on use of solar technology in poultry.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The community will be involved in energy assessment survey as proposed by the NGO. 30 women SHGs will be demonstrated regarding the backyard poultry units using Solar PV for lighting and ventilation. Demonstration and training will be done on use of solar technology in horticulture. Monthly review, monitoring of activities and meetings with line departments for convergence will be done. Community based organizations will be involved to spread public awareness on efficient use of energy and conservation.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The knowledge gathered will be shared with other SHG members in federation meetings for a larger sharing. Project outcomes and results will be captured properly by the project staff on quarterly basis based on indicators developed.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project will demonstrate effective use of renewable energy in livelihood enterprises pertaining to horticulture and poultry thereby increasing livelihoods of women entrepreneurs and increase climate change adaptability among them. The introduction of solar energy for these activities is going to reduce the cost of operation. Village Institutions will be strengthened in 20 villages to use solar energy in horticulture and poultry. 4 Solar Pumps will be provided to 4 different farmers? clubs while 15 solar driers will be supplied to 15 women SHGs who will be involved in vegetables and NTFPs.

Policy Impact

The project will establish partnership with MNRE/OREDA for support towards solar energy based livelihood technologies like Lighting & ventilation for poultry and driers and pumps for horticulture. It will also established linkage with JDA (Juanga Development Authority) for support for the poultry sheds. Links will be established with ITDA and JDA to replicate the model in other tribal habitations to decrease net emissions.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The project will strengthen the livelihoods of the "Juang primitive tribal community" by introducing Solar energy which is expected to reduce CO2 emission by 5476 KGs over 2 years of project completion.

Notable Community Participation

Youth groups in the villages will also be involved in the training program where films on efficient use of energy will be shown to them.

Project Results

* 2021 stakeholders trained in 20 villages on various aspects of energy efficient models and technologies along with their use.
* 705 horticulture farmers/ stakeholders trained on appropriate solar technology. Men, women and young girls involved in WADI plantation participated in the training.
* 908 poultry stakeholders trained from 20 villages/ 30 SHGs. 50 beneficiaries from 4 villages have been supported with solar lights and ventilators and JDA will provide the same to other 16 villages.
* 4 bore wells have been dug in 8" dia for irrigation inside horticulture field by leveraging funds from NABARD.
* 4 (1 HP) solar pumps have been supplied to 100 WADI farmers in 4 demonstration sites. 100 PV lights and 100 ventilators have been given to 100 families in 4 demonstration villages. Saved 48000 Kg of wood per year.
* 100 poultry house of 54 sft build in 2 project villages. Properly vaccinated chicks have been distributed among 100 families. Proper training given to the groups on chicken rearing by livestock inspector under government schemes.
* 1462 MT of CO2 emission reduced by implementing low carbon technologies.
