Reducing drudgery and poverty in Kalahandi District of Odisha through Climate-friendly technologies.

The project aims at:
- Reducing distress selling of farm produce and NTFPs by establishing enterprises through women SHGs and cooperatives and promote sustainable forest management and agricultural practices.
- Promote low carbon house construction through utilizing fly ash and making bricks to replace mud bricks that use vital top soil and avoid combustion of fossil fuel.
- Reduce resource degradation, mass migration and increase environmental sustainability.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

20 village level micro plans will be formed for the villages. 2 sensitization meetings will be organized in each village annually on sustenance of the protected village forest and ill affects of shifting cultivation like forest fire. One workshop will be organized in Bhawanipatna to formally launch the project which will involve various stakeholders like PRI members, women SHG members women cooperative members as well as officials from Horticulture department, NABARD, Odisha Livelihood Mission (OLM), DRDA, Agriculture Deptt, other NGO and CBO. A block level convergence workshop will be organized in the 2 block of Lanjigarh and Bhawanipatna for convergence of the sustainable land and forest management as well as climate change mitigation activities to ensure replicability and scaling up of the project. Demonstration will be done on nursery raising in Laxmipur Centre for Custard Apple.

Gender Focus

Community as a whole will participate in the project. Participation of women will be increase in Agriculture due to shifting trend in rural agricultural based livelihood occupation and reduction in shifting cultivation. 20 Women SHGs will be formed/ strengthened and engaged in enterprises of NTFPs for better management and control of resources and convergence. Women drudgery and health hazards will be reduced by promoting smokeless cook stoves (at least 500 smokeless cook stoves will be installed) to reduce CO2 emission. Women will also be involved in increasing area under cultivation, cropping intensity and food production. Every village will have a demonstration unit of organic pesticides and liquid manures managed by the women SHG in the village. 2 women cooperatives are being involved for taking up trading of organic vegetables and fly ash bricks.

Policy Impact

Linkage with the horticulture dept. is proposed to provide fruit plants to the community. Links will also be developed with NABARD and banks to access loan for scaling up the business of the women cooperatives. The introduction of smokeless cook stoves has a great potential for scaling up and replication in this region as it is low cost and the women drudgery is a main problem in this region.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project will aim at Promoting low carbon house construction through utilizing fly ash and making bricks to replace mud bricks that use vital top soil and avoid combustion of fossil fuel and reduce distress selling of farm produce and NTFPs by establishing enterprises through women SHGs and cooperatives and promoting sustainable forest management and agricultural practices. Food and nutritional security of women and their families will be improved through access to enhanced income and food diversity. There will be a net increase in the incomes of women from farm and non- farm based interventions on a sustainable consumption & production basis. Organic Farming will be promoted and SRI will be adopted in 200 Hectares of land. The installation of 500 cook stoves will help in reducing CO2 emission by 1400 MT annually while the fly ash unit will reduce CO2 emission by 27.6 MT annually. 20 Permanent structure based Vermi compost units will be constructed in each village. Soil health and fertility will be increased to sustain agriculture based livelihoods.

Capacity - Building Component

Training will be provided to women SHG and cooperative members as well as men on entrepreneurship building and skill development for livelihood to check migration as well as enhance income. Training will be done on Organic Farming and SRI targeting 200 Ha of farmland. Conducting training on Fly ash Brick Making for women artisans already engaged in producing construction of toilets using earthen compressed blocks. Training sessions will also be organized on Hillbroom Making and Siali Leaf Plate Stitching. Trainings will be provided to all SHG members on sustainable collection and selling of NTFPs like Tendu, Harada, Bahada, Garul, Amla etc.

Project Results

* 809 smokeless chulhas have been installed against a target of 800 reducing 3843 MT of CO2 emission.
* The tribal community has replaced their traditional cook stoves with the SGP model fully.
* Partnership established with RWSS Dept., PRI and Rural Development Dept., ICDS and Odisha Livelihood Mission.
* 20 women SHGs strengthened. A fly ash brick making unit has started functioning led by a women cooperative. It?s providing bricks for toilets under the SBM. 900 kg of top soil saved in a day.
