Reducing drudgery and poverty in Kalahandi District of Odisha through Climate-friendly technologies.
The project aims at:
- Reducing distress selling of farm produce and NTFPs by establishing enterprises through women SHGs and cooperatives and promote sustainable forest management and agricultural practices.
- Promote low carbon house construction through utilizing fly ash and making bricks to replace mud bricks that use vital top soil and avoid combustion of fossil fuel.
- Reduce resource degradation, mass migration and increase environmental sustainability.

Project Characteristics and Results
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
20 village level micro plans will be formed for the villages. 2 sensitization meetings will be organized in each village annually on sustenance of the protected village forest and ill affects of shifting cultivation like forest fire. One workshop will be organized in Bhawanipatna to formally launch the project which will involve various stakeholders like PRI members, women SHG members women cooperative members as well as officials from Horticulture department, NABARD, Odisha Livelihood Mission (OLM), DRDA, Agriculture Deptt, other NGO and CBO. A block level convergence workshop will be organized in the 2 block of Lanjigarh and Bhawanipatna for convergence of the sustainable land and forest management as well as climate change mitigation activities to ensure replicability and scaling up of the project. Demonstration will be done on nursery raising in Laxmipur Centre for Custard Apple.
Gender Focus
Community as a whole will participate in the project. Participation of women will be increase in Agriculture due to shifting trend in rural agricultural based livelihood occupation and reduction in shifting cultivation. 20 Women SHGs will be formed/ strengthened and engaged in enterprises of NTFPs for better management and control of resources and convergence. Women drudgery and health hazards will be reduced by promoting smokeless cook stoves (at least 500 smokeless cook stoves will be installed) to reduce CO2 emission. Women will also be involved in increasing area under cultivation, cropping intensity and food production. Every village will have a demonstration unit of organic pesticides and liquid manures managed by the women SHG in the village. 2 women cooperatives are being involved for taking up trading of organic vegetables and fly ash bricks.
