Being Good Stewards of the Earth: Leading by Example Mindszenty High School’s contribution in reducing Palau’s carbon footprint. Phase #1.
Mindszenty High School (MHS) is implementing a ?Greening Our School? initiative where the
school community has established conservation practices in the school. The purpose of this
effort is aligned to the school?s mission to help develop young people who will live by the
Christian call to service and be moral, intellectual and spiritual stewards. Part of this effort to
be better stewards is to ensure that these young people and the school community reduces its
carbon footprint, and overall consumption footprint. To demonstrate this effort, MHS students
have developed a plan to improve water management and reduce water. MHS also has had an
ongoing recycling program ? where plastic bottles and cans are collected for recycling by
student groups. MHS also has a policy for school-wide energy-use reduction through limited
hours for operating air-conditioning in school facilities.
MHS?s proposed project is to install solar photovoltaic energy systems as part of the ?Greening
Our School? initiative. This project will further support the school?s efforts to reduce the
school?s greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) and more importantly reduce the energy bill. The
project also proposes to use the installation, monitoring and maintenance of the PV systems as
an opportunity for learning for students. This project is part of the fit in well with newly
installed science laboratory, iClassroom, and newly funded robotics project. MHS is using
innovation to enhance students? learning. One of the SLO?s (student learning outcomes) for
Mindszenty students ? what we expect of them by the time they graduate states: The
Mindszenty student at graduation is able to understand the need for a sustainable lifestyle
based on awareness of social, economic and environmental consequences, and is beginning to
live it. We believe that the best way for students to be able to achieve the mission is with
concrete, hands-on projects, where they can see the results.
