As part of the Global ICCA Support Initiative (GSI), the proposed project aims to improving understanding of the national ICCA situation, promote the appropriate policy and legal recognition of ICCAs, and support up to ten community organisations to apply for their own SGP proposals. Partners of Community Organisations in Sabah (PACOS Trust) will undertake the project activities in all three regions of Malaysia in collaboration with Jaringan Orang Asal SeMalaysia (the Indigenous Peoples Network of Malaysia, JOAS), the community organisations in up to ten Indigenous communities, and two individual ICCA Consortium staff and members in Malaysia.

The proposed activities include the following:
(1) Identifying up to ten ?emblematic? and potential ICCAs (including an estimated six in Sabah, two in Sarawak and two in Peninsular Malaysia) and a list of contact persons for each, subject to their free, prior and informed consent to be involved in this project;
(2) Providing support for community organisations to develop and administer their own SGP proposals and grants, including through regional capacity building workshops, community consultations and ongoing technical support;
(3) Producing a synthesis paper on the national ICCA situation;
(4) Producing a revised legal review with three mini case studies;
(5) Supporting the emergence of a national ICCA network and engaging in outreach with additional communities;
(6) Undertaking public outreach activities and policy engagement, including by providing inputs to ongoing policy and legal processes and providing briefings to state agencies and legislative assemblies; and
(7) Submitting documentation for at least two ICCAs to the global ICCA Registry, with a national peer review and validation process, as appropriate.
