Transformar Fragata
Fragata is a rural poor local community on the Island of São Nicolau, located within the boundaries of the Monte Gordo Natural Park. Community livelihood options are scarce, and mainly based on small aggro-silvo-pastoral activities. Unemployment rate in Fragata local community is high; of the 32 household heads, only 20 are employed, which means the unemployment rate is overall is 38% (characterization of the Frigate community- ORAC-SN-2013).
Due to its isolated location, lack in access of water for irrigation and domestic use, and lack of employment options, community livelihood option have been deteriorating. There is also lack of capacities to couple with water sustainability issues, and also ways to increase community resiliency to climate change.
The project aims to provide resources to mobilize water for more efficient agro ecological activities, to include adoption of techniques which will improve water management best practices. Additionally, the project will provide financial and technical know-how on how to improve agricultural products transformation in order to increase product added value, and increase community income and resiliency.
These activities will promote and diversify income-generating in rural areas as well as develop women's small businesses. The project will benefit women head of household and local farmers in Fragata.
Several partners will be involved in implementation and monitoring, including the Monte Gordo Natural Park, Delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, and Regional Partners Commission (CRP)
