Sar?kaya Lynx Conservation Project
Sar?kaya Lynx Project aims to initiate the very first lynx conservation study in Turkey and also generate a solution to a human-lynx conflict which is a new and different type of human-carnivore conflict seen in the country. The main reason of this conflict is not a wrong practice of local people, but instead their wrong knowledge about the lynx which is actually a key species for the development of their local communities. Solutions to such a human-lynx conflict was already developed in European countries where the low acceptance of lynx by local people had been a common case. By following the same approach used in Europe, we will follow a two-step approach, during which a ?communication? and ?mutual understanding? will be established between locals and us at the first step which will allow us to increase the awareness of local people on the lynx in the second step. Another objective of the project is to collect baseline information on the lynx for the large-scale, countrywide lynx project that we aim to carry in out in close future. The most required baseline information is the distribution of the lynx in Turkey. The most recent distribution map of the species dates back to 1980s. Today, the distribution of the lynx in the country is only ?guesstimated?. Because of the large sized of Turkey, we plan to include several NGOs in our next countrywide lynx project. Before setting up a network, the methods that we will use have to be made perfect. Therefore the last objective of the Sar?kaya Lynx Project is to establish a cooperation with one local and one countrywide NGO in order to test the methods.
