Regional Experience Promotion and Skills Enhancement on Waste Sorting Project
Baseline Information
The project?s targeted area includes Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu. The eastern coastal area cored by Shanghai is traffic developed and densely populated, which makes it one of the biggest waste-producing areas where garbage incinerators are also densely distributed. Conditions are similar in south China area cored by Guangzhou and southwestern area cored by Chengdu.
Main Problems
(1) Few NGOs? work focus on waste issues. They do not have adequate skills and experience as well as lack of external resources.
(2) Some communities have successful experiences of waste sorting, while a systematic training system has not been established. Moreover, existing successful experiences are not widely promoted.
Proposed Activities
(1) Capacity building curriculum development on community waste sorting: Investigating local successful experiences of waste sorting in all cities and developing a community training system and toolbox for waste sorting.
(2) Capacity building and incubation centers on community waste sorting: Launching practitioner training workshops at the 3 centers of Zero Waste Alliance in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu and organizing study visits in east China region involving both government and NGO participants.
(3) Experienced instructors give professional one-to-one guidance to NGOs.
(4) Experience exchange and dissemination by Zero Waste Forum and casebook of nationwide successful waste sorting models.
Anticipated Results
(1) A community waste sorting training system and a toolbox for community activities will be developed.
(2) Community waste sorting incubation centers in 3 regions will be established and 3 workshops concerning waste sorting will be conducted to promote the capability of at least 80 NGOs.
(3) 30 representatives from government and NGOs will attend study visits together to enhance their communication and collaboration on promoting waste sorting.
(4) One-to-one instruction will be given to 10 key organizations with total time of over 960 hours.
(5) A ?Zero Waste Casebook? will be drafted where 10 successful cases of waste sorting are summarized. The casebook will influence at least 50000 people by websites and we-media. Nationwide Zero Waste Forum sharing experiences, will directly influence over 200 people.
(6) Zero Waste Alliance development promoted.
