Promoting zero waste at Trashiyangtse through community partnership
Promoting zero waste at Trashiyangtse through community partnership
Waste affects every one of us in Bhutan. Everyday whether be it at home or at work, we dispose off so much wastes. Waste disposal is an emerging problem in almost all the urban towns in Bhutan. The increase in waste generation can be primarily attributed to factors such as rapid rates of urbanization, rural urban migration, changing consumption pattern and high population growth rate. While the magnitude of the problem is relatively small and manageable in rural areas, it appears to be growing significantly in urban areas in recent times (SACEP 2010).
Trashiyangtse Dzongkhag is located in extreme east of Bhutan. Trashiyangtse town has been declared as Thromde during Session of the Second Parliament (National Assembly 2015). The demarcated area of Tashi Yangtse Thromde has about 526 voters with a population of over 2,000 and 75 shops, hotels and bars.
Although a newly established Thromde, the settlements been there for decades and have deteriorated the tributaries that run through the Thromde area. The two tributaries that run through the identified Thromde feed into Kulong Chu with all the solid waste. This requires a special attention on the issue of solid waste, which poses serious threats to public health and hygiene due to contamination of water and soil. Thromde is also located next to a protected area known as Bomdeling Wildlife Sanctuary and with the modern lifestyle has already crept into these protected areas from the Thromde creates a major threat to the protected area as well the streams flowing through the town.
Most of the residents residing within the protected area visit town for their grocery and other household items. The old habits of throwing their waste out into the open space and rivers without realizing that the waste they throw are new type of waste, which no longer decay like before.

Clean Bhutan through funding support from GEF Small Grants Programme Bhutan aims to focus in Tashi Yangtse Thromde as demonstration project on waste reduction by practicing 4R (Reuse, Reduce, Recycle and Responsibility). So far, several waste management programs have been implemented in the town but never focused on behavioral change and segregation. This project aims to advocate behavioral change and the mindset of people to practice the 4R by focusing on responsibility to reduce waste at source by understanding of not being a consumerist society.
The purpose for selecting Trashiyangtse town is to provide a model Thromde/Town in the eastern part of country, which can then be replicated in the eastern towns and Thromde.
The project will focus on ?Sustainable Management & Recycling of waste at Trashi Yangtse. To achieve the main goal of the project, the flowing objective will be implemented. The demonstration project hopes to provide and establish facilities a waste management unit. The project will educate the local community on the types of waste and its negative impact on human health, ecosystem and riverine. Provide with knowledge on how to segregate their waste and manage it accordingly. The project intends work with town people and form committee which will regulate waste management system and plan of the town.
