Greening of Lower Badibu Ecosystem to Enhance Biodiversity Management (GLOBEL) project

The main goal of the project is to restore degraded wetland in Lower Badibu District, precisely in Kerewan, Kinteh Kunda, Saaba and Gunjur; and enhance stakeholder participation. The project specifically intends to rehabilitate lost indigenous tree species in the area, replant mangrove swamps along Bang Bolong tributary affecting four villages, pilot one wood lots in the four villages to provide fuel wood and plant shelter belt around the villages.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Establish and strengthen Wetland Education Clubs (WEC) in the schools in the target communities, organise environmental Olympic competition amongst WEC Schools, hold WEC Managers' Committee Meetings, issue and disseminate progress reports.

Capacity - Building Component

Local communities shall be trained on the techniques of mangrove planting.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Mass consultation with the community leaders, farmers, youth and women's groups.

Notable Community Participation

The major stakeholders of this project include the youth groups in the target areas. The project will involve working with youth including school children during implementation.

Policy Impact

The project aims at complementing Government's efforts in attaining the objectives of NBSAP.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The woodlot to be piloted shall provide fuel wood and other forest products that are usefu; an to a large extent, a source of incomel to the community.

Gender Focus

Women's groups as well as the community leaders are stakeholders in the project. Community leaders in the Gambia are predominantly men.

o Abubacarr Sidiq Islamic School, Gunjur, Lower Baddibu
o Ebrihima Sidiq Islamic School, Kinteh Kunda
? Organized 1 capacity building workshop with 190 participants from the target community. Out of this, 180 participants representing 95% of total participants were from the 9 schools
? Planted 57, 000 mangrove propagules
? Agro forestry site identified and demarcated
? Procurement of fencing materials for the Agro forestry site
? Conducted a 2 day workshop on the causes and prevention of bush fires for 52 participants from the target communities
? Procurement of 383 T- shirts for the target schools? wetland clubs
? Constituted a task force committee to combat the generation of bush fires in the target communities
? Procured and distributed 1, 000 poly pots to the schools with Wetland Clubs for them to sow seedlings of their choice
? Conducted a field trip to Fathatala Nature Reserve
