To use boundaries of traditional farms to plant Cashew and Eucalyptus seedlings for the protection and conservation of soil and farms in Lower Badibou

The aim of this project is to plant cashew and eucalyptus seedlings along boundaries of traditional farms of six communities of Kerewan, Suwareh kunda, Kinteh ? Kunda, Saba, Gunjur and Banni; and to establish a tree nursery in Suwareh kunda, for people of the district.

This project aims at benefiting six villages of Kerewan, Suwareh ? Kunda, Kinteh ? Kunda, Saaba, Gunjur and Banni, all in Lower Badibou in the North Bank Region of the Gambia. Two people from each of the above mentioned villages will be directly responsible for the caring and management of the project on ground. The project will built in Suwareh ? Kunda a tree Nursery centre where they will be given trees to individuals to plant in their lands and within their farms. The project will use boundaries of traditional farms to plant cashew seedlings for the protection and conservation of soil and the farm land from erosion and degradation.

Project Characteristics and Results

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

2 Youth groups from each of the 6 target villages are to be engaged to participate in the implementation of the project. CYA is in constant collaboration with Village Development Committees to ensure smooth project implementation.

Notable Community Participation

CYA is entirely a community-based youth organisation set up to contribute to national development by embarking on community initiatives including environmental work. In this project, 12 youth organisations in the target villages shall be directly involved in the implementation of project activities.

Capacity - Building Component

Capacity needs identified in the project are in the area of tree planting, caring and seedling management. As a result, the project seeks to train 24 personnel on tree planting, caring and seedling management.

Planning gef grant

If funds are available, it is expected that the project activities will be scaled up to a GEF-MSP.

Replication of project activities

Once successful, the project results and outcomes will serve as a stimulus for replication by other communities under similar conditions.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Participatory project monitoring, issue of progress reports that will be disseminated to stakeholders, minutes of project committee meetings be made available to all stakeholders.

Linkages gef projects

Possibilities exist to link up with large GEF projects which may be operating in the area.

Gender Focus

The main project activities are envisaged to be carried out by men. To counter the gender imbalance, a women's vegetable gardening activity shall be implemented alongside the main project activities.

Policy Impact

The project outcomes are likely to lead to either the development of new policies or influence existing policies in land management.

Policy Influence

The project will attempt to promote farm boundary plantings using cashew and Eucalyptus to combat soil erosion and improve soil fertility on degraded farmlands. The implementation will involve the participation of partners from Departments of Agriculture, Wildlife, Forestry, Community Developmental and other NGOs and CBOs. It is hoped that the outcomes will influence local policies on land reclamation.

Planning non gef grant

There will be attempts made to scale up with other non- GEF grants once the outcome is successful.

Project sustainability

With a tree nursery and water facilities provided, the project acitivities are planned for continuation each year. The management committee members received training on nursery management at the Njawara Agricultural training Centre funded by the project. The acquired skills are expected to be used to sustain project activities once SGP support ends.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Women vegetable gardening - which is a lucrative income generating activity for women in the target villages - shall be implemented alongside the major activities of the project such as planting of eucalyptus trees, setting up of a tree nursery among other things. farm boundary planting to curb wind erosion and the introduction of agro-forectry practices among farmers will lead to increased incomes and so contribute to poverty reduction and attainment of food security in the target areas.

Project Results

? Community mobilization and stakeholder meeting with target beneficiaries on the objectives of the project was successfully concluded at the start of the project in October 2016. The meeting reviewed the aim and objectives of the project, the expected outputs/outcomes and the role of the community members during implementation.
? A site was allocated by the village for the tree nursery which was cleared of weeds and fenced for protection. Beds were prepared for raising the required seedlings.
? Water supply was secured by getting a connection to the main water tap in the school and a reservoir water tank was installed in the nursery.
? Hired the services of a contractor to construct a Waiting Shed tha would be used for conducting the training sessions and various meetings by the project.
? A storage facility for the seeds and tools was also constructed in the nursery.
? Conducted a 2-day training workshop on cashew farming for 40 participating farmers form the project villages. The sessions dealt with issues facing agricultural productivity, declining soil fertility, factors contributing to natural resources degradation, the role of cashew in combating land degradation, increasing incomes etc were covered.
- About 20, 000 cashew and Eucalyptus seeds were originally sown but due to poor seed viability, the germination percentage was about 50%. After a second trial, about 10, 000 cashew seedlings and 500 mahogany seedlings were successfully raised.

- The seedlings will be distributed to individual farmers from the 6 villages as well as to groups for planting for farm boundary plantings to serve as windbreaks and some will be used in agro-forestry farming to improve soil fertility.
