Mangrove and village spring rehabilitation and marine protected area
Mangrove and village spring rehabilitation and marine protected area
Faleapuna village is located on the North East of Upolu. It is surrounded by one of the most rich biodiversity and watersheds in the Atua district. The project is looking at coastal management of its natural resources such as the mangrove area of more than 10 acres and an existing Marine protected area nearby. The livelihood of the village depends on the marine life and with the effects of new settlements on some of the mangrove reclaimed areas and overfishing on the reefs, the villagers are concerned that if they continue the way they are operating, their mangroves where fish are bred and the corals where they go out to as their homes, will become extinct with intensive man made influence. The planning grant aims to raise the awareness of the village and to prepare for a full proposal to be submitted to the SGP office for funding consideration.
