Development of Communities' Capacities on Conservation of Biodiversity for Self-survival in Enyi Village, Boki LGA, Cross River State.
The community of Enyi, with an estimated population of 5,000 people is in Afi/Mbe REDD+ pilot site in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State of Nigeria. They are faced with deforestation due to farming, unsustainable harvesting of non-timber forest products, illegal logging, overhunting of wildlife, and destruction of watersheds resulting in fragmentation of the forest. These have contributed to loss of biodiversity, loss of habitats, livelihoods, increasing unemployment, water shortage, low farm productivity, food insecurity and mortality contributing to the non-realization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in target Community. This forest dependent Community has witnessed increasing poverty and this has aggravated further pressures on the forests, resulting in a repeating cycle of deforestation and unsustainable use of biodiversity. These are the underlying reasons this project is designed to address aforementioned problems. The project activities are: (a) awareness creation on forest and climate change; (b) Training on sustainable use of the forest; (c); Raising of seedlings and regeneration. (d). training of farmers, hunters and empowerment on livelihoods options.
