Establishment of energy willow seedbed to provide planting material for Poltava region

The project focuses on two main components: planting of energy willow seedbed and conducting information campaign to promote alternative energy for heating and hot water supply purposes in Poltava region. The expected project results are:
? Conducting a comprehensive analysis of soil and preparing of a 5 ha land plot to plant 10 600 000 of energy willow seedlings.
? Maintaining and controlling the growth of seedlings, cutting the trees, testing the willow. The project prepares a report based on this research.
? Developing a Green Calendar to promote benefits of alternative energy.
? The training for students of agricultural universities and the final forum to share the project results, involving the academic community of Poltava State Agricultural Academy.
? Creating a website to promote alternative energy in general and energy plants in particular; sharing the project information through partners? websites and the local media.

Gender equality is a part of project policy and all parties participate in project activities on equal base and benefit from project results.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Green Calendar, created within the project, is passed around the local community to enhance people?s awareness on environmental issues.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The establishment of energy willow seedbed helps communities to acquire a more sustainable lifestyle through use of alternative energy. It has both environmental and cost-effective benefits.

Notable Community Participation

The local youth actively participates in establishment and maintenance of energy willow seedbed. They are the main target group of informational campaign. Scientific community of Poltava region (students and educators) is particularly involved in the project.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The project results and details are widely covered by the media, through partnership websites and especially through a newly established web resource of the project which facilitates promotion of alternative energy sources in Poltava region.

Project Results

The achieved results of the project:
1. Energy willow seedbed was created in the village of Shylivka (Reshetylivka district, Poltava region) with an area of 5 hectares. Testing of grown willow was carried out.
2. More than 10,600,000 seedlings were received for further planting on new plantations in Poltava region.
3. Demonstration seedbed for the year of growth allowed to obtain 58.5 tons of dry biomass of energy willow. This in turn allowed to obtain 237.72 Gcal of thermal energy.
4. 35 temporary jobs were created for members of the community of Shylivka village.
5. Training on growing energy willow for students of the Agricultural and Economic College of Poltava State Agricultural Academy (150 students).
6. A forum was organized and held to disseminate the results of the project (135 representatives of the Poltava community).
7. A Green Calendar with information on the use of alternative energy sources, in particular energy crops, was created. 700 copies of the calendar were printed and distributed at public events of the project.
8. The information web portal http://ecomerezha.org was created.
